Most Popular Names … for Dogs

By
STEPHEN J. DUBNER

The New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene has just released

its annual list of the most popular dog names.

I will list them below and, just for kicks, I’ll put in parentheses each name’s rank among the most popular boy or girl baby names in the U.S. If a dog name doesn’t have a number next to it, that means it hasn’t been among the 1,000 most popular boy or girl names in the U.S. in the past 15 years.

1. Max (165)2. Lucky3. Princess (738)4. Rocky (965)5. Buddy6. Coco7. Daisy (149)8. Lucy (174)9. Lady10. Shadow

The most popular dog name in North America is Sam, Sammie or

Samantha (which means “listener”).

The second most popular is

Max, Maxie, Maxwell or Maxine (which means “the greatest” in

Latin).

Third is Lady, followed by Bear, Maggie, Buddy, Tasha,

Chelsea (or Chelsie), Holly and Shasta.

Other very popular names

are Brandy, Ginger and Taffy.

It may be surprising, but more than half (50%) of all Pet Names

are either human names or nicknames. People largely name their

animals as they would name themselves.

Another fifth (20%) of names are based on the Pets appearance or

personality. A black cat becomes Blacky or Midnight, and active

dog Comet or Dash.

As dogs have become increasingly loved and accepted family members, names like Fido and Rover have become less popular, in favor of human names. Max, Molly, Riley, Bailey, Maggie, Sadie, Murphy, Toby, and Zoe are some of the current most popular names for dogs, according to Go Tags.com, an online merchant that sells pet name tags.

If you don’t believe me, look at this edited sample list of suggested dog names taken from a German “Hundenamen” Web site: Aida, Ajax, Alice, Amy, Angel, Angie, Aron, Babe, Baby, Bandit, Barney, Beauty, Benny, Berry, Billy, Bingo, Blacky, Blue, Buffy, Butch, Calvin, Candy, Chaos, Charlie, Cheese, Chelsea, Cheyenne, Cindy, Cookie, Criss-Cross, Curly and Curtis. And that’s just taken from the A-C section! Yes, I left out some of the more Germanic names from the original list, but you can see the Germanic names in our own Haustiernamen list. The point is that “exotic” English and other non-German names are popular with German pet owners. Even the “detective” hero of the bestselling German cat mystery novel Felidae was named Francis, not Franz. Most German name lists for pets contain about 90 percent non-German names.
