runaway dog, where are you…
Finding a lost dog at night…
Publicity Hound Joan Stewart shares about how she recently lost her dog at night and asked for some tips from her readers. Below are some of the comments that I thought were helpful to dog owners.
Here are a few ideas to help you when you are walking your dog at night:
1. Get one of those blinking lights that you can attach to her collar. They are pretty inexpensive and a great way to see them when they wander away. Plus, the drivers can see the dog, too, so s/he won’t get hit by a car.
2. Make sure s/he has a tag on ($5 at the local pet store) that has the dog’s name, your name and your phone number. Consider adding the word “reward” to the tag.
3. Consider using a break-away collar so s/he can’t choke if s/he gets away and gets tangled up in a dumpster or something else.
4. Yell, “NO!” as loud as you can. If your dog is trained to stop whatever s/he’s doing when s/he hears that word, s/he may well stop right in his tracks.
5. Keep your dog away from garbage bags and cans. They can be dangerous. Keep the leash short when you are near such things.
6. Wear rollerblades so you can keep up with the running dog when s/he takes off! (kidding)

Here are another reader’s tips:
1. Get your dog microchipped at the vet’s. NOTE: I DO NOT AGREE WITH THIS… MICROCHIPS CAN CAUSE HEALTH PROBLEMS INCLUDING CANCER…
2. Buy your dog an engraved tag with their name, address and phone number on it, and attach it to their collar.
3. Train your dog to come back to you when thier name is called, no matter what. (My secret weapons for accomplishing this are cheese, peanut butter or some other treat that your pet finds irresistible.)
4. Wear running shoes when walking your pet. You never know when you might need to chase after them or run away from a big, mean dog. It’s also a good idea to carry pepper spray and a whistle to help fend off strays.
any other ideas? I generally don’t walk cici at night, she has her yard to go into… Although today, she finally (after six months of living here) out how to open the gate while I was gone. I should have locked it, she was barking and whining when I left. I left her yesterday, too. Yes, she is spoiled and used to having me around most of the time or taking her with me whenever I go… Yesterday, she invaded the trash and had herself a time with that. Today, the gate. Thankfully, she was still in the yard when I got back two hours later. She could have wandered off, gotten onto the street, etc. I immediately locked the gate and will keep it locked from now on…
your dog probably does not know how to call 911 in case of emergency, so don’t play chess or russian roulette with your doggie… keep ‘em safe.
