Free Fun Ideas for V-day

The average person will spend over $130 on Valentine’s Day this year, according to a report from the National Retail Federation. This amounts to a pretty pricey mid-February evening for those of short on cash.

Happily, there are lots of free things to do this Valentine’s Day that will leave you wondering why you ever paid a premium for fun. Check out the following ideas and be sure to hit up MrFreeStuff.com for a complete list of 60 dates that don’t cost a thing.

Note: And most of these can include your pets, if you choose to bring them along and have them join in on the fun. Or if you are alone with them and want to invite single friends over. All sorts of possibilities.  You can make it a Galentine’s Day or Palentine’s Day or whatever you want !  You could even fundraise with your dog’s kisses for your favorite animal rescue. Smooches from Pooches.

1. Create a Game Night
Host a game night this Valentine’s Day. Whether it’s a mellow game of Scrabble or a high-intensity round of Texas Hold ‘Em, you’ll enjoy a little friendly competition with your date.  Tug of war, throw the frisbee, ball or chew the stuffed animal works for Fido.

2. Head to the Playground
Skip the pricey restaurant. Have a picnic at home or at the park with lunch meats, cheese, potato salad, French bread and wine. At the playground enjoy some kid-like fun. Compete on the swingset or see who can hold out the longest on the merry-go-round. Chase the dog or have the dog chase you.  Climb the monkey bars.

3. Volunteer Together
Valentine’s Day seems to be all about what you’re doing for your special someone. Why not collaborate and do something for others instead? Soup kitchens, animal shelters and nursery homes could use a few good volunteers, so spend your Feb. 14 brightening someone else’s day.

4. Make S’Mores
Forget chocolate-covered strawberries; s’mores are where it’s at this Valentine’s Day! Roast marshmallows over your kitchen stove, expertly melt chocolate and create a multi-layered, gooey treat. Camp out at home, back yard and toast the marshmallows and chocolate over the fire.

5. Bring the Spa Home
Spas and salons will be brimming with lovey-dovey couples this Valentine’s Day, but you can skip the crowds and create a better experience at home. Gather your candles, towels and favorite CDs and prepare a steamy bath. Complete the experience with a couples massage.

6. Get Touristy
Despite how long you’ve lived in your current city, there are likely several hidden gems you haven’t yet experienced. Stop by the local visitor’s center with your date and inquire about free things to do in your community, then hit the road toward discovery.

7. Host a Movie Night
Host a movie night and ask friends to bring their favorite snack to share. Peruse your DVD collection for a funny or thought-provoking flick and leave the tear-jerkers for just the two of you.

8. Relive Storytime
Open a bottle of wine or pop the top on your favorite brew and settle in for an evening of storytelling. Share passages from your favorite books or pick up your favorite childhood classics from the local library. Once upon a time…

9. Cook Dinner Together
Cooking a meal for your loved one has long been a Valentine’s Day tradition, but why not prepare something together? Challenge each other to create a tasty meal out of items you already have in your pantry and toast to your resourcefulness.

10. Host a Wine Tasting
Tasting flights will cost you a pretty penny at fancy restaurants, but you can bring the experience home for less. Ask friends to bring a bottle of wine and their favorite snack pairing and enjoy an intellectual discussion about tannins and undercurrents.

Random acts of baked goods

Due to the inspiration of the Nine Nanas, who for 30 years have been making delicious lemon/lime pound cakes and giving them out to strangers in secret, anonymously, I thought why not do cupcakes and/or pupcakes?  (since they might be easier for me to make and bake) as a way to paw it forward… raise money for animal rescue/shelters… a creative way to promote your bakery or business. Lots of fundraising and giving happiness ideas.

pay it forward with pound cakes

http://choosywomen.wordpress.com/2012/06/22/pay-it-forward/

Feel free to perform random acts of baked goods.  If you are a bakery, who would like to donate baked goods, let us know. And if you are an animal rescue or shelter and want us to help you raise funds, let us know. And if you just want to utilize this idea, please let us know when you do !

Here are some cupcakes (for humans) recipes as well as pupcakes (for dogs) recipes for you to consider pawing forward.

for pupcakes

Ingredients:

Muffins:

• 2 cups shredded carrots

• 3 eggs

• 1/2 cup applesauce, unsweetened

• 2 tsp. cinnamon

• 1/2 cup rolled oats

• 3 cups whole wheat flour

Frosting:

• 8 oz. low fat cream cheese, softened

• 1/4 cup applesauce, unsweetened

Instructions:

Muffins:

1. Preheat oven to 350° F

2. Lightly spray cups of muffin tin.

3. In a large bowl stir together the carrots, eggs and applesauce. Set aside.

4. In another medium bowl whisk together the cinnamon, oats and flour.

5. Slowly mix in the dry ingredients. Stir until well blended.

6. Spoon mixture into muffin tin. The dough will be thick, so you may wet your fingers to press the dough into place.

7. The dog cupcake will not rise very much, so do not worry about over filling the muffin tin.

8. Bake for 25 minutes.

9. Cool completely on a wire rack before frosting or serving.

Frosting:

1. Blend both ingredients with a hand mixer until well blended.

2. Spoon into a pastry bag for easy decorating.

Storing: These dog cupcakes will keep fresh in your refrigerator for 2 weeks. You can freeze them for up to 2 months. If you are going to freeze them, do not decorate with the frosting until they have thawed. For more information on how to store homemade dog treats please review our tips.

For cupcakes decorated as dogs/cats

To make the base you will need:

1/2 cup unsalted butter

2/3 cup caster sugar

2 large eggs

1 tsp vanilla essence

1 cup SR flour

100mL milk

1. Pre-heat the oven to 180 degrees C. Line a 12 cupcake tin with paper cases.

2. Cream the butter and sugar. Add the eggs one at a time.

3. Beat in a little of the flour and the all of the vanilla essence. Then beat in the rest of the flour.

4. Add the milk and mix well.

5. Fill each cupcake case about 3/4 full. Bake for about 15 minutes, or until cooked in the centre.

6. Put on a rack to cool after 5 minutes.

To make the decorations, you will need:

250g cream cheese

1 cup icing sugar

1 tsp vanilla essence

large chocolate buttons

yellow, orange, brown and green chocolate M&Ms

biscotti

Fru-chocs

Black icing pen

spaghetti or noodle strands, cut into 4cm lengths

1. Beat the cream cheese, icing sugar and vanilla essence with electric beaters until smooth.

2. When cupcakes are completely cool, spread a generous layer of icing on each cupcake.

3. To make a dog cupcake, place a chocolate button in the eye position. Affix a yellow or orange M&M on top of the chocolate button for the pupil. Put a small dot of black icing in the centre of the M&M to make the pupil. Add a matching M&M and dot of black icing for the other eye. Put a Fru-choc in the nose position. Draw in the mouth with the black icing pen. Finally, affix two biscotti for the ears, using a dab of icing mixture to hold each ear in place,

4. To make a cat cupcake, place two orange or green M&Ms in the eye position. Pen in a vertical line of black icing on each M&M to create the cat’s pupil. Cut two large chocolate buttons so as to make two triangles. Position the triangles in the ear position. Next, put a brown M&M in the centre of the cupcake for the nose. Pen in the mouth using the black icing pen. Finally, add some spaghetti or noodle lengths for whiskers.

my dog is a bunny rabbit hopping

why is cici  limping/hopping?

http://www.2ndchance.info/limping.htm

my major concern is due to her “bad” leg, the one she had three surgeries on her femur bone which was broken due to being run over when she was a little over a year old…there seems to be a bump standing out on the joint of that leg… does not appear to hurt her when I touch or move it… she was limping about a month and a half ago after some heavy exercise but it stopped so why now all of a sudden the last few days has she started hopping again????

roommate got home last night, am hoping he will take cici for a long walk

http://www.medicinenet.com/pets/dog-health/dog_is_limping.htm

Joints: Any one of the many joints in a dog’s limbs can be the source of enough discomfort to result in a limp. Discounting the multiple joints of the paws, there are three major joints in each limb of a dog. A dog’s front limb consists of the carpus (or wrist), the elbow, and the shoulder. The hind limb includes the tarsus (or ankle), the stifle (or knee), and the hip. Check each of these joints by applying light pressure and then increasing the pressure to moderate. If no discomfort is noted, try gently lifting the limb and slowly duplicate a normal range of motion. By supporting the entire limb, you can examine each joint in isolation and hopefully identify the source of the limp.

Bones: There are approximately 321 bones in a dog’s body. Bruising or fracturing of many of them could cause enough discomfort to result in a limp. Check the leg bones by visual observation first. Look for swelling, bleeding, or other signs of injury or asymmetry. Similar to examining the joints, examine the long bones of the limbs by applying mild to moderate pressure along their entire length. You can verify any suspected irregularity or abnormality by comparing it to the other healthy limb.

Steps for Performing an At-Home Pet Exam, by Dr. Karen Becker of Mercola.com
Regular at-home physical exams can help you learn what is normal for your pet’s body, and therefore allow you to detect when something is not normal. While it’s still important to take your pet for a professional annual exam at your vet, you can keep watch on your pet’s health in between visits by getting to know what’s normal, and what’s not, for your individual pet.
Perform the exam in a relaxed environment when your pet is not stressed or excited, or after an exercise session or nap (when they are likely to be sleepy and ready to relax). Put them on your lap, start with the tip of their nose and work your way to the tip of the tail.
1. First check the nose for debris and take note of whether it is wet or dry. Your pet’s nose will not always be wet and typically vary from moist to dry throughout the day depending on your pet’s body temperature, activity level and hydration.
2. Then, take a look to see whether there is abnormal eye discharge. For instance, if your cat or dog never gets eye discharge and suddenly has it, it’s a sign that there could be a problem.
3. Next check whether your pet’s pupils are symmetrical and look at the whites of their eyes. Red sclera (the part that is normally white) could mean inflammation of the eyes.
4. If your pet is not accustomed to having its mouth examined, slowly acclimate your pet to facial massages so that you can eventually check their mouth, gums and teeth. When you can, check inside the mouth for lesions, swelling, and bad breath. Their gums should be pink, teeth free of tartar and plaque, their tongue clear and the roof of the mouth clean and free from debris.
5. Next check the jaw line to see if it feels normal. Check the ears for debris, odor and cleanliness. Brush back the hair and look at the skin and coat. Check for excessive flakiness, lumps and bumps on the sides of the spinal cord and evaluate muscle tone and weight.
6. Look at the claws and pads of their feet. There should be no debris between the toes. Check for heat and swelling over your pet’s body and test the range of motion of the joints. Do the joints move freely without resistance or difficulty?
7. Gently palpate their belly to look for lumps and notice if your pet seems to experience discomfort. This is a good time to also gently check both mammary chains (do this for males too). Even if you don’t know the names of all the parts you are touching, if you examine your pet regularly you will begin to know what is normal for your companion. When there are changes, you will notice them quite quickly because you are familiar with the terrain of his or her body. Also examine your pet’s bottom for cleanliness.

Remember, in order for you to know what’s abnormal about your pet, you first need to know what’s normal. Performing regular at-home exams is a simple and very effective way for you to keep a close eye on your pet’s health. You can see a video of this exam at http://healthypets.mercola.com/sites/healthypets/archive/2009/11/07/how-to-perform-a-home-physical-exam-on-your-pet.aspx

fun trips for you and the pooch for the New Year

Looking for fun and adventure with your pooch for the New Year?  Here are a few ideas.

The public is invited to bring their real Christmas trees to Perfect Christmas Tree Farm on January 7th, 2012. Regardless of where the tree was purchased, farmer John Curtis calls on everyone to recycle their  real Christmas trees at Perfect Christmas Tree Farm. He chips real  trees, no matter what size and makes mulch for the new growing season.

Activities begin at 9:00 AM and go until 3:00 PM on Saturday, January
7, 2012, only. This is a ONE DAY event.

http://www.perfectchristmastree.com/

Even if you cannot make it to this event in New Jersey, perhaps there is a LOCAL event like this in your area. Google, call your local tree farms, media, and find out if you can bring your pooch.

Bring your dog on a leash to the Perfect Christmas Tree Farm, a dog friendly farm. There is a display setup to take pictures with your dog and other loved ones, for Valentines Day. Give the chickens some feed as you pass their coop. A hay wagon is going out for rides around the farm, weather permitting.

The tree chipper accepts any real Christmas tree, clean of metal, tinsel, plastic and ornaments, and turns it into useable garden mulch.

“Nothing is wasted in nature”, says farmer John Curtis. “People think we rent this chipper to collect the mulch. We encourage people to take the mulch. Put two inches around your trees, shrubs, herbs and vegetables, you have less weeding to do. Plants are preparing for
spring. So should we. Spring is here in less than three months.” He offers everyone to take as much mulch as is needed.

If you have a tree or not, no matter  where you purchased your tree, go to the Mulchfest to share a  winter’s day with neighbors, enjoy free refreshments in a warm historic setting, children’s entertainment and healthy outdoor fun, throughout the day.

Activities start 9 AM with a ceremony honoring the Earth. Christmas trees are then loaded into a chipper. Trees start their return to the earth as nourishing mulch and compost. Mulchfest honors Perfect Christmas Tree Farm’s commitment to local farming, historic
preservation and enriching the earth.

There is no charge for the Mulchfest and attendees are encouraged to take mulch back to their home, to nourish the Earth where they live. Bags are provided.

Now, for the more adventurous and fit among you, an interesting trip to teach your dog new tricks… dogsledding and skiing !!!

Muddy Paw Sled Dog Kennel is not your “typical” dogsled touring kennel. Rather, we are home to 130 rescue and second chance dogs andoffer dogsledding trips and pet dog/owner packages to support a non profit sled dog rescue, history and education center, giving second chance sled dogs a home and a job for life. The rescue is strictly no kill.

Pair an inn-stay at a local pet friendly lodging partner such as the Mahoosuc Inn in Milan, NH or the Applebrook Inn in Jefferson, NH with a ski-jor or dogsled clinic with your own pooch. All necessary gear is provided for the guests’ active pup to learn to be a sled dog.

“Over the years we noticed that people travelled to our region with their pet but then they got here and “Fido” had nothing to do. In an effort to solve that problem, these two packages were created:

Ski-Joring with one of our experienced dogs to teach our guests’ pups the ropes or running with a small team is all part of the vacation. Often guests start with Ski-joring on day one and move to the dogsledding clinic on day two during their stay in our area.

Many guests comment that they’ve always wanted to start their dogs in pulling activities and give them a job for physical and mental stimulation. They leave their vacation understanding the gear and training necessary. We are happy to provide email support as they try it on their on at home when they get back (for free of course).

The kennel offers these tours to support the rescue and second chance huskies that call Muddy Paw home. The profits from tours go to the new non profit sled dog rescue, history & education center and the guests appreciate helping a great cause while having the “experience of a lifetime” with their own pet and guides that love dogs just as much as they do!

Ski-Joring is when one or more dogs is attached to a person wearing supportive hip belt via bungee (to absorb shock), non-stretchy tug-lines and an x-back style harness). The person wears cross country skis and works in tandem with their dog to zip along on our groomed trails. Sometimes dog booties are utilized, depending on trail conditions. Moderate physical ability is required for this activity for both the dog and the participant … it is wonderful excercise for both!

Here is a link to the equipment we use:  http://nooksackracing.com/skijoring.html Previous experience cross country skiing is ideal, but certainly not a must, beginners are welcome, we love to teach them how to work with their dogs… we find owners of northern/active working breeds especially see problem behaviors disappear once their dogs are more active and thus physically and mentally stimulated.

For our less adventurous or less physically active guests, they can utilize the ski-jor equipment minus the skis and allow them to learn to work with their dog cani-cross style, which means “dog assisted” hiking or snowshoeing.

Here is a link to ski-joring info  : http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Skijoring

If you personally have an active dog, any winter “joring” activity is sure to be a hit!    These activities are wonderful for many large, working type dogs such as Pointers, Hounds, Labs, Goldens, All Northern Breeds, Mixes, Cattle Dogs, etc.

doggie creative

feeling creative?  I was inspired by these blogs and sites today…about a new phenomenon called yarn bombing… where people apparently knit/crochet in public places and create artistic statements and fun…

http://blogs.babble.com/the-new-home-ec/2011/09/06/22-yarnbombing-examples-to-make-you-smile/

http://www.apartmenttherapy.com/sf/outdoor/yarn-bombing-the-guerrilla-knit-graffiti-movement-151393

here is one cool example I liked for my yard but there are crocheted phone booths, cars, etc:

am going to make Cici a harness, a granny square coat/mat, and/or a few other goodies… am also thinking that a rainbow throw would be fun.  perhaps you’d like to crochet your dog a sweater, collar, leash, toy, bed, harness or even a Howloween costume… go to crochet doggie central… you can get patterns and instructions… then buy the yarn, crochet hooks and start crocheting your heart out… I used to make rugs, granny square kids clothes and more… it’s a lot of fun… and if you’d like me to crochet a sweater or make something else for you, let me know.

Tis the Season

In this economy, a group of creative animal loving folks came up with a great idea. They’ve created a new website that enables folks to donate money to your favorite animal shelter/rescue organization. As you shop, a percentage is donated to the shelter/rescue. How cool is that?  And if you do not see your favorite listed, you can add them to the list. It is a FREE service.

When you shop through AdoptAShelter.com at one of the retail merchants, Adopt-A-Shelter™ is paid a commission.  Adopt-A-Shelter™ directs 100% of the donation displayed on AdoptAShelter.com directly to your shelter / organization. Prices, customer service and discounts are all the same at stores such as PetSmart, Best Buy and online at Amazon and others.  And you do not need to register with the Adopt a Shelter site, or login or subscribe to anything !

Easy as 1 2 3… Adopt a shelter/rescue … Go Shopping … Shelter/Rescue Gets Money

Start shopping and donating.  Before you know it, the holidays will be here…

Adoptashelter.com

If you need step by step instructions like I did here goes:
Go to www.adoptashelter.com

Under “1 Choose a Shelter to Adopt.” Click on “Search.”

It will drop down a list of shelters & rescues.

Click on your group.

If you don’t see your favorite group,  Go up to the bar and click on “Add a Shelter.” Fill out the information. It may take a day for your group to be approved.

Once you’ve clicked on your shelter, an orange square appears that says, “Shop Now.” Click on it.

A list of types of stores will appear.

Click on Amazon. Because it carries everything, Amazon appears under every category.

Once you click on the store, it takes you to the store’s website. You shop as you would ordinarily shop.

Spend lots of money! Buy cool stuff.

and when you go shopping with your dog, here’s some tips for doggie etiquette:
