Replace euthanasia stress for shelter workers with adoption celebration

Via Rescue50: Is the shelter director in your community passionate about saving lives? Does he/she leave no stone unturned? Or does he/she hide behind excuses (“too many animals, not enough homes,” “it’s the irresponsible public’s fault,” “no one wants to kill”) while the shelter kills animals in the face of lifesaving alternatives?

Leadership is everything. If you do not have a true leader running your community shelter, it is time to move him/her out and get one.

Compare PETA’s rate of killing vs. adoption to shelters in Virginia (many of which are not even trying). According to inspection reports by the Virginia Department of Agriculture, the PETA facility “does not contain sufficient animal enclosures to routinely house the number of animals annually reported as taken into custody… The shelter is not accessible to the public, promoted, or engaged in efforts to facilitate the adoption of animals taken into custody.”

Routine inspections often found “no animals to be housed in the facility” or, at best “few animals in custody,” despite thousands of them impounded by PETA annually. Since they take in thousands per year, where were they? “90% [of the animals] were euthanized within the first 24 hours of custody,” according to the Virginia Department of Agriculture inspector. According to Ingrid Newkirk, PETA’s president: “We are not in the home finding business, although it is certainly true that we do find homes from time to time for the kind of animals people are looking for. Our service is to provide a peaceful and painless death to animals no one wants.”

How can people “want” an animal when PETA kills them within minutes without ever making them available for adoption? How can people “want” animals they do not know exist because PETA has no adoption hours, does no adoption promotion, and does not show animals for adoption, choosing to kill them without doing so?

PETA is not in the home finding business. They are in the animal killing business. Learn more:

shelters are not adopting out enough animals… it is NOT that animals are unwanted, too many (overpopulation) nor is it that there are not enough homes/adopters…

America’s approximately 4,000 animal shelters are currently adopting out more than 4 million pets per year – between 2 and 3 per shelter, per day. By simply increasing that by an additional 2 pets per shelter, per day, the 3 million healthy and treatable pets who currently lose their lives in shelters will be saved.
