Susie’s Hope on TV

This is an incredible week for pit bulls with Pit Bull Week at HuffPost Green and this movie, wow !!!

A pit bull attack survivor adopts an abused pit bull … this just makes me cry. The courage exhibited by Donna Lawrence is truly inspirational and healing. (Imagine if someone else who shall remain nameless went on this path instead of the path of hate and revenge, oh well, everyone chooses what they do).

The movie Susie’s Hope, the true story of Greensboro, NC’s Donna Lawrence (played by Emmanuelle Vaugier, “Two and A Half Men,” “CSY: NY”), a natural-born animal lover who barely survives a ferocious, life-threatening attack by an abused pit bull but learns to overcome her new fear of dogs and move forward in the most unexpected way – by adopting and caring for a brutally abused, abandoned pit bull-mix puppy named Susie.  Susie’s Hope premieres exclusively on UP on Sunday, August 3 at 8:00 p.m. EST / 7:00 p.m. PST.

Susie’s Hope is an inspirational, hopeful movie about unexpected second chances and compassion,” said Sophia Kelley, senior vice president of programming, UP.  “After almost losing her life, Donna Lawrence finds the strength to face her newfound fear of dogs and motivate a state to pass legislation to help prevent cruelty to animals. Susie’s Hope is a truly touching film that’s guaranteed to uplift all who watch it.”

Susie’s Hope recounts the story of Donna Lawrence (Emmanuelle Vaugier), a long-time dog enthusiast and caretaker, who warily observes the neglect and deterioration of a nearby neighbor’s pit bull and volunteers to help.  When the owner moves and abandons the dog, Donna is left behind as the animal’s caretaker.  Every day, she places a bowl of food in the doghouse and walks away.  During a routine visit, the fearful dog attacks Donna without warning, pinning her to the ground, viciously clenching her at the throat.  Donna calls out to God and finds the strength to throw the dog off and roll away.  After being rushed to the emergency room by a neighbor, the doctors tell her that she is lucky to have all of her limbs as well as her life.  Donna receives 45 stitches in her leg and spends the next two months learning to walk again.

With the help of her husband Roy (Burgess Jenkins), Donna heals physically but the emotional scars of the traumatic attack leave her shaken and frightened until she meets Susie.  Donna’s close friend, Ramona (Andrea Powell) is who initially comes across Susie, a pit bull-mix puppy that had been beaten, set on fire, and left to die by her former owner. Both having experienced vicious attacks, Donna and Susie share mutual fears and learn to conquer them together.  Donna makes peace with her wrongful attack and Susie forgives humans for hers. Spearheading a group of like-minded individuals, the pair ultimately inspire and move an entire state to take a legislative stand against animal cruelty through the passage of “Susie’s Law,” which strengthened North Carolina’s penalties for animal abuse into a Class H felony.

About Donna Lawrence and Susie:

Donna and Susie have worked to overcome their mutual traumatic experiences to inspire and minister to others (human and canine).  Donna and Susie visit schools, nursing homes, churches, burn centers and organizations, and attend pet adoption fairs and fundraisers to motivate and educate people surrounding animal cruelty.  Captivating the hearts of those that learn of Susie’s story, Susie was recently recognized as the 2014 Therapy Dog winner for The American Humane Association Hero Dog AwardsTM. The commendable recognition has placed Susie in the national finals (as one of the eight finalist contenders) of the 2014 American Humane Association Hero Dog Awards™.  To vote for Susie, visit: http://www.herodogawards.org/vote?nominee=35549916.  Voting ends Monday, September 15, 2014 at 12 p.m. EST.

The problem with Time Magazine

The problem with Time Magazine and Charlotte Alter

http://time.com/2891180/kfc-and-the-pit-bull-attack-of-a-little-girl/

l. if you know ANYTHING about dogs and specifically about the history of American Pit Bull Terriers, American Staffordshire Terriers, and the other dog BREEDS lumped together and called “pit bulls,” you know that these dogs were bred to be SUPER/EXTRA people friendly so that the handlers would be able to work with them. ALL people aggression was bred OUT of these dogs.  So the first paragraph in this article begins with a lie AKA a MYTH not a FACT.  Apparently, the writer of this article had NO TIME to do any REAL Research nor to interview REAL DOG experts such as James Crosby and Victoria Stilwell.

Screen shot 2014-06-21 at 5.27.53 AM

Pit Bulls are not an aggressive breed of dog.

*According to the American Temperament Testing Association, APBTs have an 85.3% passing rate, compared to a passing rate of 81.9% for all breeds on average.

http://canineaggression.blogspot.com/

This is FANTASTIC, point by point, she tells it like it IS…

http://www.swaylove.org/the-many-problems-with-charlotte-alters-time-article-about-pit-bulls

2. Then this article goes on to quote DISCREDITED time and time and time again pit bull haters and fantasy dwellers such as Colleen Lynn, Merritt Clifton and PETA.  Yes, scratch the surface of these three together and you get nonsensical stats based upon media overreporting of so-called pit bull attacks (if it looks like a dog, call it a pit bull and there you have a headline and ridiculous stats to use to ban pit bulls), fear/paranoia and a call to KILL all the dogs (disguised as more logical sounding breed discrimination aka breed specific euthanization)… of course, they leave OUT that in places like Denver, CO where BSL has been implemented, dog bites have GONE UP because the REAL PROBLEM has NOT been dealt with. Breed is NEVER the problem. Ignorance about Dogs IS the problem.

Oh by the way, PETA kills healthy adoptable dogs and cats and has for years. And their founder, Ingrid Newkirk, was killing animals at a shelter, a job she relished. PETA thinks killing companion animals is a gift to them.

3. oh yes, and speaking about the Michael Vick dogs. 51 dogs who are doing JUST FINE. Eight became therapy dogs, and many are living in homes with children, cats, other dogs, in FAMILIES and shown NO signs of aggression. Not ONE.  These dogs were tortured, traumatized, terrified of humans, unsocialized, kept chained up 24/7 and made to fight tor their LIVES. Yet, once taken away from Vick’s Bad Newz Kennels and given tons of TLC and taught how to be dogs at Best Friends Animal Sanctuary, BADRAP, the Monterey SPCA and other places, they’ve thrived.

4. Here is the REAL SCOOP on what causes DOG BITES and ATTACKS according to REAL DOG experts.

http://www.pasadenanow.com/main/opinion-everyone-in-the-community-is-concerned-about-agressive-dogs-and-stopping-dog-bites

Instead of blaming the dogs, how about holding PEOPLE accountable. People are the ones responsible for the abuse, torture, neglect and abandonment of dogs. Humans are the violent ones. Toxic macho masculinity culture teaches young men that they must be TOUGH and FIGHT, MAIM and KILL animals and other creatures. All of the serial killers have a history of hurting and killing animals then move on to human beings.

A few stats:

Every year, more than 2,000 children in the U.S. are killed by their parents or guardians either through abuse or neglect. A child is more than 800 times more likely to be killed by their caretaker than by a Pit Bull.

From 2001 through 2012, 6,410 women were murdered in the United States by an intimate partner using a gun—more than the total number of U.S. troops killed in action during the entirety of the Iraq and Afghanistan wars combined.

…Women in the United States are 11 times more likely to be murdered with a gun than are women in other high income countries… http://americanprogress.org/issues/guns-crime/report/2014/06/18/91998/women-under-the-gun/

Puppy huggers united

In this country, as in all countries, we have people with hearts and others who should not be allowed out in public never mind holding public office (in Congress). At the very least, a mental health inspection/test should be required for mayors, Governors, Congress people, Vice President and President. That would eliminate a lot of the riff raff (the entire GOP?) well… people who hold public office should at the very least show empathy, compassion, and just plain human kindness and decency. Real moral values and integrity would be good, too.

to us puppy huggers, the photo below is sweet (and to me even more so since the dog looks like my princess)… say awwwwww… it also confirms that animals/dogs have feelings too as living sentient beings.

What does one have to do with the other? I’m getting there…  there are some crazy people in politics/Congress, and running for President, who think otherwise, because there is something decidedly wrong with them, in my humble opinion… no heart, no compassion, no empathy and no human kindness. People who lie and steal belong in jail not in public office.

I so LOVE Colbert, when he NAILS it… in this case, he totally gives Rep. Steve King what he deserves for wanting to allow dog fighting (overturn laws banning dog fighting and the new law banning being a participant at a dog fight)…

and then there is this piece of work…

Thank you to Dogs Against Romney for this…

Why having SANE people passing bills and governing is important IF you love animals AND if you love people and IF you love our country and the Earth, too.

Michael Vick’s pet rock

On Piers Morgan, the other night, Michael Vick once again expressed his desire to have a pet for his kids. Not a pit bull, he said. There are rumors that he has already bought a beagle. God forbid. (There was a fake World News report last December that said he had gotten a beagle but the article was FAKE). It is important to remember that Vick put his own pet dog Champagne into the dog fighting ring as bait and laughed at the dog getting hurt. He thought it was all fun and jolly to kill dogs in the most horrific ways possible… poor innocent animals who did not perform well.  He killed at least 12 dogs in six years.

Don’t believe me? Look at page 4 of the 2008 USDA report that details him torturing his kids family dogs, for his own amusement and that of his friends.
http://www.usda.gov/oig/webdocs/BadNewzKennels.pdf

but hey Vick says someone else made him kill and torture dogs, oh really… buy that and I’ve got a bridge to sell you.

http://www.nathanwinograd.com/?p=1789

Intentionally maiming and then killing dogs is no mistake and NO ONE can make you BE A SADIST. It is a calculated and callous crime. Vick not only funded a dog fighting operation, he also engaged first hand in the cruelty for six years. He personally violated dogs using electrical wire and then threw them into a pool so they were electrocuted. He also executed approximately 8 dogs that did not perform well in ‘testing’ sessions” and killed using various methods, including hanging, drowning, and slamming at least one dog’s body to the ground.

please vote NO, this poll now says 81% think vick should get a dog, http://www.tmz.com/2012/07/18/michael-vick-dogs-piers-morgan/

In another article, Vick says he does not have to answer any questions about dog fighting anymore. We DISAGREE.  He has NEVER answered the questions honestly.   Psychopaths/sociopaths are all alike… (Like Mitt Romney and his taxes, they think the rules do not apply to them)…

http://offthebench.nbcsports.com/2012/07/30/michael-vick-on-his-dogfighting-past-im-never-answering-these-questions-again/

Below are a few well written responses to this idea. Vick does not deserve a pet rock, in my humble opinion and that of many of us who have gotten to know and love the dogs that were formerly his at the Bad Newz Kennels… Ginger, Stella, Hector, Cherry, Handsome Dan, Little Red, Squeaky Jean, and many others, some who have passed. And in memory of those who were killed at Vick’s hands such as the little red dog in The Lost Dogs book by Jim Gorant. It is unbearable to consider such a possibility when the above named and unnamed dogs are still suffering, and Vick has shown absolutely NO remorse whatsoever for the damage he did to them and the others found dead on his property.  Three times Vick was offered an opportunity to meet with Best Friends, Bad Rap and Richard Hunter, pet guardian of Mel, who lost his bark and suffers immensely from anxiety. And Vick refused each time.

When a person refuses to FACE THEIR PAST WRONGDOINGS how can one possibly move forward?  Vick says he paid his debt. Truth is he got a sweetheart plea deal and should still be in prison for the ANIMAL CRUELTY charges that he was never charged with. He only went to jail for the federal charges of “Conspiracy to Travel in Interstate Commerce in Aid of Unlawful Activities and to Sponsor a Dog in an Animal Fighting Venture.” (explained below in Chris Durant’s blog post). Animal abuse and dog serial killing is a precursor to people abuse. A homicidal maniac is a homicidal maniac is a homicidal maniac. It makes me ill to think of Vick being allowed near another animal ever again in this life.

Michael Vick’s dog adoption app

“Best Friends is often asked if we think Vick should be allowed to own another dog. While his eligibility for dog ownership is a matter of law, imagine, if you would, what it would be like reading through a potential dog adoption application from Michael Vick:

  • Have you had a dog before? Yes
  • If yes, how many? Lots
  • Do you still have a dog(s)? No
  • If you have had dogs in the past, please let us know their current disposition. Dead or confiscated by federal authorities.
  • If you no longer have other dogs, please let us know what happened to them. Some I sold to dog fighters, some I had my cousin electrocute or shoot, some I personally strangled, drowned or body-slammed to death.
  • Why do you want to get a dog at this time? Because I served my time and kids want a dog.

OK, thank you, Michael. We’ll get back to you on your application.”

http://blogs.bestfriends.org/index.php/2012/07/20/michael-vick-dog-adoption-app/

“Sure, let Michael Vick get a sweet, furry, little four-legged friend; While we are at it, let’s just have convicted serial child molester Jerry Sandusky open a daycare or head a children’s charity of some sort.”

http://dfw.cbslocal.com/2012/07/19/michael-vick-future-dog-owner-no-way/

“Michael Vick says maybe he’ll get a dog.

“And, worse yet, at the end of this month — when the no-dog clause of his sentence for dogfighting expires — he legally can.”

http://www.ohmidog.com/2012/07/18/michael-vick-says-maybe-hell-get-a-dog

“Between 2001 and 2007 Michael Vick sponsored dogs in eleven fights. Additionally, he traveled to four states to purchase eleven dogs. Again, could this not be construed as 22 counts? Even with Vick’s meager sentencing this would have equated to 396 months or 33 YEARS!! And even at an absolute minimum, why was he not charged with four counts of the incredibly weak “Conspiracy…”?

“But better yet, if he had been truly tried according to Virginia’s Animal Cruelty Laws he could have been tried for twenty dog fights and nine executions. SIXTY FIVE YEARS! Instead, he was again allowed to plead out (while serving out his Federal sentence) to ONE count of dog fighting (the single Animal Cruelty charge was dropped as a part of the plea agreement) and received a three year suspended sentence for time served on the Federal charges. The prosecutor (Virginia’s Surry County Commonwealth Attorney General – Gerald G. Poindexter) didn’t feel that the costs associated with transporting Vick to Virginia from Leavenworth penitentiary in Kansas was worth it. There was also another $2,500 fine which was suspended as well. Nice job, Poindexter. I am sure the good people of Surry County think you’re a real legal eagle, huh?

“Another side note: Five of the surviving dogs rescued from Vick’s compound had to be put down. He was not held accountable for those either. But, according to Virginia law, he absolutely should have been. That would have brought the potential charge count up to 34 and another $12,500 for Mr. Poindexter’s ridiculous transportation fund.”

http://chrisdurant2000.wordpress.com/2011/01/02/michael-vick-was-wrongly-convicted

Look into the innocent eyes of the dogs, some still haunted, some still suffering from fears and anxieties and tell the world, please, does Vick deserve to own another dog???

And sign this petition if you think that the dogs and Jim Gorant, author of the Lost Dogs book deserve equal air time on CNN and Piers Morgan…

How to make a pet rock

Send Michael Vick Some Balls

perhaps we should send him rocks or balls with dogs names on them to jog his memory and conscience (does he have one?) and let him know what he did to those dogs are why he cannot EVER have another pet, no matter if it is legal… let him tell his kids the real reasons (The Lost Dogs) why he can’t EVER have another pet… IF he really had changed and had a shred of integrity, he would… (am not holding my breath)

Dogs in hot cars

If you have to go shopping and must take your dog with you….

Do NOT leave your dog in the car when it is HOT outside…

http://autos.aol.com/article/police-are-cracking-down-on-dumb-dog-owners-in-heatwave/?icid=maing-grid7|main5|dl12|sec1_lnk3&pLid=176647

In a Stanford University study, when it was 72 degrees outside, a car’s internal temperature climbed to 116 degrees within one hour.

Enclosed cars heat up quickly. In a study by San Francisco State University, when it was 80 degrees outside, the temperature inside a car rose to 99 degrees in 10 minutes and 109 degrees in 20 minutes.

A dog’s normal body temperature is between 101 to 102.5 degrees; a dog can only withstand a high body temperature for a short time before suffering nerve damage, heart problems, liver damage, brain damage or even death.

Studies show that parking in the shade or cracking the windows has little effect on a car’s internal temperature.

what to do if you see a dog in someone else’s hot car and the dog is in distress
1. Call 911, the police and/or animal control
2. Try to find the owner

Signs an animal is in distress include:

  • Excessive panting
  • Excessive drooling
  • Increased heart rate
  • Trouble breathing
  • Disorientation
  • Collapse or loss of consciousness
  • Seizure
  • Respiratory arrest

At least 14 states and many municipalities have laws that specifically address the problem of animals left in cars in extreme temperatures. These laws often authorize law enforcement officials to enter a vehicle and remove the animal. Even states without these provisions may consider leaving an animal in an enclosed car to be animal cruelty.

The Essex County Prosecutor’s Office has several boxes of faxes and emails that they have received over the last several months. I remain confident that the Prosecutors Office understands the importance of this case and I am hopeful that the Court proceedings will move forward with a positive outcome, most importantly for Patrick. Right now prayers are best and in the near future if I need an ” ANIMAL ARMY” I will let everyone know. Next appearance is this Friday, January 20th…………….. Capt

And the latest news regarding Lennox…

Keep in mind that nothing has been verified** What has been going around is that no decision has been made today and the Judge may have until Jan 21 to reach a decision.

most of us thought the trial date was 11-11-11. they made a mistake on the date his trial has been held off till 1-21-12. lets hope they lift the pit bull ban for the new year and stop killing all the pits and dogs that look like a pit!

as of October 19, 2011, Lennox has been given another reprieve…A point of law has been submitted which the judge will now consider. This could take up to a month. More to follow.

Lennox is still alive

Caroline Barnes is a former veterinary nurse, owns other dogs in addition to Lennox and has fostered dogs.

The family was given 21 days to find a legal loophole in decision, to find a point of law on which to base one more appeal.

The Belfast Telegraph is reporting that the family has indeed found such a point of law and says that a spokeswoman for the Lord Chief Justice of Northern Ireland has told the newspaper that an appeal will be lodged on behalf of Lennox by Friday.

It has been reported that a source for the Belfast City Council has indicated there will be a stay of execution.

(Am no lawyer especially not of Irish law, but could the family sue the Judge, Belfast City Council, people who lied, people who took Lennox away and people who are keeping Lennox away from the girl, etc. for their daughter’s health issues resulting from the inhumane treatment of their dog and threat of his being killed?)

Blog the Change: Pit Bull Awareness

When I thought about how to honor Pit Bull Awareness Month (and how to Blog the Change), it occurred to me to do an update about Ginger… one of the three former M. Vick dogs I met in Monterey at the SPCA.    I was hoping to also get stats on pit bulls in Monterey from the SPCA but so far nada. There are about 8 pit bulls available for adoption on their website. They are inundated with a large number of chi’s right now.

But in many many shelters across the country, a majority of the dogs up for adoption and the dogs that are euthanized are pit bulls and pit bull mixes due to human ignorance about the breed. Pit bulls are abused across the board, in all ways, starved, neglected, abandoned, made to fight so humans can make money and tortured for no reason other than how they look and human fear and hatred of dogs. Every year 4-6 million healthy pets get euthanized in shelters across the USA and a high percentage of those are pit bulls and mixes.

(Updates about Patrick, the starved dog in NJ and Lennox, a dog that is not even a pit bull, who may in a week be euthanized in Belfast, Ireland …)

More about Breed Discrimination and Pibbles

Ginger and her mama are very special and fabulous ambassadors for Pit Bulls everywhere. LOVE is the KEY factor that MAKES the difference in a DOG’s Life. And Ginger personifies how great pit bulls are… goofy, loving, sweet and loyal… Even after being fought, tortured, abused, ALL of the former Vicktory dogs are a great example of the breed. Eight of the former Vick dogs are now therapy dogs. And most of the dogs are now spending time in loving homes with other dogs, kids, cats and humans. Several have their own facebook pages… Hector the Pit Bull, Handsome Dan, Cherry Garcia, Jhumpa Jones, and others. Clearly, it is NOT the dogs that cause problems, it is the humans that make a difference, one way or another.

From Stacy Dubuc, Ginger’s wonderful adopter aka doggie mama:

After being rescued from Michael Vick’s Bad Newz Kennels, Ginger made the long journey from Virginia to The SPCA for Monterey County.  Two years old at the time, she had spent most of her life in a kennel and had had very little positive interactions with humans.  She quickly went into a foster home to provide her with a quiet stable environment where she would hopefully come out of her shell.  Her early months in foster care were not easy, she was incredibly timid and would cower and hide whenever approached.  The timid shell of an animal I brought home needed way more than simple material items – she needed compassion, patience, love and some sort of understanding after the ordeal she had been through.

Our early days and months were not easy – her clinging to the back of her crate for hours on end as I cried and wondered if we would ever be friends, her fleeing from any attempt at a gentle touch, refusing to eat for days as I tried a variety of techniques to prevent her from wasting further away…it goes on and on and has probably been experienced by many a person fostering an abused animal.  We worked through those tough times and eventually became friends.

It is hard to believe but November 6th will make four years since Ginger came home with me. It has been such a pleasure watching her evolve into the confident, happy, and incredibly loving dog she is today. She loves running about the yard, going for long walks along the rec trail, naps, treats, etc.  The dog that used to cower from people is now curious and willing to meet new people. While, she will still shy away from being petted by most strangers, she will eagerly sit and take treats from them.  Most of the people we meet will never know her past…they simply see her as a beautiful happy dog passing by them on the trail.
