Enter to Win: Traveling dogs

Does your dog drive you crazy or drive you to the store?

Be sure to READ BELOW TO FIND OUT HOW YOU CAN WIN CASH !!!

Fur in the breeze, adventure in her blood, born to be wild Cici loves car rides, no matter where we go. She will hop in anyone’s car, (although she has her preferred vehicle, a Subaru, of course). She loves to go to the beach, shopping mall, dog park or to her favorite pet friendly winery. She even loves going to the vet. But, some dogs do not enjoy driving in the car because they associate car driving with getting a bath or haircut and nails trimmed at the groomer or some other terrible experience (going to the vet or worse).  Dogs who fear driving in cars may throw up, drool, whine, shake, cry or otherwise make life miserable for the driver of the car (that would likely by you).

Make traveling with Dog a breeze

You can ease your dog’s anxiety in the car through a number of methods, from giving them Bach Flower Essences, Rescue Remedy, aromatherapy essential oils (a few calming drops of Lavendar on paws), a calming collar filled with aromatherapy oils and/or play some nice relaxing doggie music made for scaredy dogs like Through a Dog’s Ear by Lisa Spector.

Whenever Cici drives in the car, she is surrounded by her very own pillows and blankets and hitched up to the seat belt but many dogs would prefer and feel safer in a crate or a carrier. NEVER put your dog in the back of your truck, that is one of my pet peeves. What happens when they jump out or if you have to stop quickly? And do not ever let your dog be in the front of the car, sitting on your lap or in the shotgun seat. Much too dangerous. It also goes without saying that your dog should NEVER be put in a kennel on the top of the motor vehicle, either… for ANY length of time.

Cars Made For Traveling Dogs

Car savvy traveling dogs like Cici have voted for their favorite car to drive in. And that car is a Subaru, no matter the model. Cici and I drove our Subaru Legacy station wagon for two years all over California, Nevada and Oregon without a hitch. Well, except for running out of gas and getting a flat tire. Subaru cars are ideally suited to and made for traveling dogs. And their Dog Tested Dog Approved campaign, that we’ve mentioned a couple of times, shows dogs the best car to drive. Grant Weber, Subaru Canine Sales Associate devotes his life selling cars specifically to dogs. Dogs of ALL breeds, little dogs, big dogs, scaredy dogs, brave dogs and most especially traveling savvy dogs.

Watch him sell cars to dogs here…   click on the link…It is funny and Made for Dogs… especially dogs who LOVE to EAT !!!!

As part of their campaign, Subaru has launched a facebook app that is FUN and offers some  things to do, such as the Subaru Dog Matcher, the Ask the Expert, Put Your Dog in a Subaru, and the Canine Driver’s License Division (you can make a driver’s license for your dog – I made one for Cici, make sure you put in a fake address).

F9E60FBF-09EB-3C2B-4603-64CC755EF2EA-l

Grant Weber suggested Cici would prefer a Subaru Outback for our next car and with the app we can even build our own Outback to our specifications, and the car even comes with snacks, how cool is that?

Cici would look great
in a Subaru Outback.

With the go-anywhere capability of the Outback, you can get away from that fenced-in yard of yours and sniff out some real adventure…

Dog friendly wineries Napa/Sonoma

With Valentine’s Day fast approaching, in a few days, you might want to visit some dog friendly wineries if you are in the Napa Sonoma area. Below are a few of the ones that allow dogs on the property. If you want to have a romantic night on the town sans pooch, you can make it up to the dog with some extra treats and belly rubs. And if you and Fido are having a fun date, you might consider enjoying a little bit of wine tasting with cheese for your dog (no wine for the dog).

Thanks to Mary Alice and Chloe at Dog Jaunt who are in the area and reminded us to do this round up of dog friendly wineries.

CritterZone Air Purifier

http://www.critterzoneusa.com/

We have been putting The CritterZone Air Purifier to good use 24/7 for days now. It is powerful, filterless and chemical-free and you can take one with you while traveling. Put one in the car and one in the hotel room and one at home. I was wheezing before using this purifier and Cici’s bugs were making her itchy. Plus, Cici can be a stinky girl. No more doggie smell, no more bugs, no more wheezing ! We love love love this little hard working product.

CritterZone air purifiers are odor neutralizers. They quickly remove the particles from the air that cause odors, restoring it to a healthier, fresher state.  An all-natural process virtually eliminates odors, bacteria and other pollutants such as mold, mildew, E-coli, Staph, Salmonella, Listeria, and more.  It safely and naturally kills germs in the air and provides a surface of protection to PREVENT germ and mold growth.   Featuring 3 settings, you control the amount of natural charged flow to clean your room or vehicle;  Virtually eliminating odors, bacteria and other air pollutants for up to 800 SQ FT!

As a busy pet owner, you may not have time to clean your home top to bottom constantly. That’s where a pet air purifier can help.

CritterZone, an ionic pet air purifier, can get to the root of the odor caused by the smelly cat or stinky dog in your life. It targets the odors and removes them, rather than covering them up. The CritterZone creates a continuous charged flow that restores the air to give it the natural cleaning power it has in the outdoors. The result is that odors are neutralized and removed from the air.

Another benefit of the CritterZone:  It can pull the odors out of fabric and carpet. If your cat or dog had an accident, hold the unit over the spot or set it nearby, and you’ll be able to tell the odor has been neutralized in minutes.

Chews On Belay dog tugs

Photo on 2013-01-20 at 16.01 #2

Cici chewed up the first one in 5 minutes but then the larger one has lasted and lasted and lasted. It is a tug toy with rope and a ball for chewing and tug fun.

To make these hearty tug toys, they use repurposed/recycled climbing ropes and hand make each and every tug. The tugs come in varying sizes and styles and have a broad range of colors. For Valentines Day, get some “love” tugs. These tugs are all red, as well as reds and whites and durable. Being made out of rock climbing ropes, they stand up to the toughest tug-o-war games. If the dog is a persistent chewer, they do not become stringy like other rope toys, meaning there is significantly less string swallowed as well as around the house. All the materials used are made in USA and the actual tug is made in Estes Park, Colorado. Tugs can be made in any color that is on the website. You can see the products at www.chewsonbelay..com You can also see pictures of the tugs in action on Facebook at www.facebook.com/ChewsOnBelay

Pets in politics

If you share your politics with your pooches…

Send pictures of your pets wearing election-year flair to Pet Lovers for Obama

and you can also send photos to Dogs Against Romney… if you are against animal abuse… both Romney and Ryan have shown that they disregard animals and/or abuse them… Ryan kills fish with his bare hands and hunts deer… Romney strapped his Irish Setter on the roof of his car for a 12 hour drive to Canada and laughs about it…

the scoop on poop around the world

A stinky subject but someone’s gotta talk about it…ok, ladies, where do you go to the toilet when traveling, especially in other countries.  And do you clean up your dog’s poop in other countries or only in the USA?

Finding tolerable toilets in India…

In my country public and paid toilet facilities are not so common so I’m sending along some advice for female visitors to India. Almost every restaurant and some tourist spots have toilets attached to them. Have a cup of tea at a hotel and take this opportunity to use the toilet facility available there. If you’ve had a meal at a restaurant, don’t leave without using their facilities (even if you don’t REALLY need to go). It might be a while before you find another proper toilet. Alternatively, if you are traveling by car and stop for a petrol fill, take the time and use the toilet facilities available at most petrol pumps. Carry tissue and wet wipes. You’ll probably need them.

(Resmi, Kerala, India)

http://www.journeywoman.com/journeydoctor/ToiletTipsWhatEveryWomanTravellerShouldKnow.htm

I would add to this…since my travel companions in India teased that if you want to know where to go to the bathroom in India, just ask me so I am something of an expert…

go to the toilet at five star hotels … you can always visit the gift shop (buy a candy bar or bottle of water) or pretend that you are waiting for someone in the lobby.

visit a business center or club such as American Express/Diner’s Club and take time out to do your personal business.

Leave a deposit at a tourist destination.

Five star or European style restaurants are also good prospects.

Best to avoid public toilets at train stations. Some airports have halfway decent stalls.

If you find yourself out in the country, you will more than likely have to squat in a hole on the ground. Be prepared that there may be onlookers. One time I was visiting a wealthy landowner’s property. I had been visiting his family and they were showing me around to see the cacao plants and other trees. In time, nature called urgently and I was led to an outhouse. I had visitors escorting me the entire way there. The people were amused and//or interested in everything foreigners did. Suffice it to say that.

India: Poop Capital of the World

http://manohar.instablogs.com/entry/india-poop-capital-of-the-world/

No Toilet, No Bride

And in Delhi, marriage brokers — who provide a popular service in a country where arranged marriages are still the norm — confirm that many families will now ask whether the groom’s family has a bathroom of its own before going ahead with nuptial negotiations.

http://www.nytimes.com/2011/03/16/world/asia/16iht-letter16.html

– It pays to use a toilet in southern India, as residents are earning close to a dollar a month by using public urinals, a scheme launched by authorities to promote hygiene and research in rural areas.

http://current.com/community/89082209_in-india-it-pays-to-use-public-toilets.htm

In the former Yugoslavia, we were brought to places in the middle of nowhere while on a bus trip. We had to pay for the privilege of peeing in outhouses that were just little huts surrounding holes in the ground. Odiferous and waxy paper was the norm. I jokingly called the country, the Toilet Capital of the World.

Did you know that Green Bay, Wisconsin is the Toilet Paper Capital of the World ?

Top 5 Public Bathrooms in the World

New Zealand, Paris, NYC, Tokyo and London, Amsterdam, Belfast

http://www.journeyetc.com/travel-ideas/top-5-public-bathrooms-in-the-world/

In Taiwan, there is a restaurant toilet, ewwwwww… toilet seats for chairs, miniature urinals for platters and tiny toilet bowls for the soup and main course…

http://www.ebcak.com/archives/270

Now the real question is, are people around the world, Europe, Asia, Canada and other countries as obsessed with cleaning up dog poop as we are in the USA?

http://www.businessweek.com/articles/2012-04-10/odd-jobs-professional-dog-poop-remover

In the states, especially at movie theatres and during seminars at hotels, don’t you just hate those long lines at the ladies restroom?

holiday tips for the road

If you are going to the Rapture today, have a great time…

Cici and I had fun driving around for two years… these are a few things that kept us safe and sane. With Memorial Day weekend coming up, these tips are helpful for holidays and can also be good for summer travel with your pooches.

l.  Comfy and cozy and restrained. I had Cici all set up in the back seat with her own blankets and bedding, toys and bones to chew on. Familiar stuff. She could stretch out and snooze while I drove. Or gnaw on bones. Whatever she felt like doing was ok with me because she was out of the way. No coming up into the front of the car or sitting beside me. I did not strap her in but now have a harness for her that attaches to the seat belt which I will use when/if we go on another road trip.  We have been invited back east in June, not sure yet if we will go.

2.  Speaking dog language. I sing songs to her, making them up as I go along. She has learned that when I sing the beach song that means we are going to the beach and she perks up. Or when I sing the doggie park song, she’ll be ready to play with doggie pals. One of the sweetest sounds is the yum yum song, meaning we’re gonna go eat some food. Salivation.

3. Give me a potty break. I take frequent breaks/stops along the way to our destinations and often times intentionally stop at places I know that she will enjoy, if possible. Beaches, dog parks, pet friendly wineries as well as shopping malls and pet stores. When we have the time to do this, it definitely breaks up the monotony of the road and makes the traveling easier and more fun.

4.  Time and traffic. We usually were not in a rush to get anywhere, so our time schedule was flexible. If we had to be somewhere at a certain time, I’d leave more than enough time to get there. When traveling on a holiday weekend, go a day or two ahead if you can or a day or two later to avoid the rush hour traffic.  Same with summer travel. Be aware of times when traffic gets jammed up and take a different route, if possible.

5. Unexpected things will always happen so prepare and expect an adventure. Bring car oil, gas can, a flashlight, a spare tire, camping gear, water, extra dog food and treats, towels, pillows, clothing, extra cash or credit card and other items you might need (shampoo, scissors, bandages, ointments and creams and oils) just in case.

6.  Maps and driving directions. Keep in glove compartment. I am not always good about this. I know the general direction or city/place and then get there and not know where to go and have to search online or on my computer. Keep phone numbers and addresses handy, too.  If you have a cell phone/I-phone, probably makes this easier. I have yet to succumb to the 21st century on this one but if you are traveling alone, especially in desolate areas such as the desert, having a cell phone is a good idea. Hopefully, there is a connection/dial tone when you need to use it.

7.  Be a good guest. Bring your best manners with you. And pet waste bags. If renting a car, cover the seats with sheets and keep your pooch in a crate or harnessed to a dog bed in the back seat. Let the fur fly somewhere else than in the rental car or you might have to pay a hefty fee. Also, be sure of the rental car company’s pet policy before you get to the rental counter. At the pet friendly inn, hotel, motel, B&B or campground, find out ahead of time their do’s and don’ts, nearby places to visit including restaurants where you can take your pooch and fun dog friendly activities in the area.

8.  Be considerate. Not everyone loves dogs and some people are afraid of dogs. And they don’t have to nor do some like pit bulls and other big dogs. And they do not have to either. Of course, rude comments, aggressive behavior and insults are not acceptable and discrimination is unwarranted. But if your dog is well behaved, does not run up to strangers, knock babies over, lick kid’s ice cream cones,  bark or yap incessantly, share fur and drool everywhere or jump up on tables, people and furniture, a better time will be had for all. Make sure your fur baby is a good ambassador for the breed and species.

9.  Accidents may happen. Bring your vet’s phone number, medical records, ID tags, photos of your pet and other info with you, just in case. Also any medications and a pet first aid kit (like the green one we suggested).

10.  One is the loneliest number. Dogs do not like to be left alone in a hotel room, strange places or even in the familiar confines of your car. Do not ever leave your four legged friend unattended in a parked vehicle. On warm days, the temperature in your vehicle is unbearable, 120 degrees, even with the windows slightly open. In addition, your pet could be taken away by unscrupulous pet thieves looking to make a quick buck.

11.  Does your Dog Have a License? If you and your dog are going to share the driving, be sure that they have their Pet’s Driver’s License. Kidding but Cici does now have her Pet Driver’s License, with all her ID listed on it plus a photo of her on it. Between this, her collar ID tag, microchip registered, she is all set to get up and go. Cannot wait for someone to ask for my driver’s license, I will definitely show them hers.

Martine Inn revisited… a wonder to behold !

a taste of elegance at a price you can afford… if you would like to have a true eco friendly wedding, you should consider the Martine Inn in Pacific Grove for an authentic turn of the century experience. Much of the time when discussing eco or green weddings, attention is paid to the organic flowers, attire, as well as the handmade or fair trade invitations and decorations. All of those details are fine… and not enough attention has been brought to the venue where the wedding takes place. And the venue is one of the most important features of a true eco friendly wedding….

http://www.martineinn.com/wedding.html

http://www.martineinn.com/wedlocation.html

here comes the bride

Dogs are becoming an important part of the wedding party. You might also consider having your K9 friend join in the wedding party as your flower gurl dog, ring bearer or best K9 friend…  🙂

Palacial estate

The Martine Inn is a palacial estate that looks over the rocky coastline of the Monterey Bay in Pacific Grove and is the perfect venue for the ultimate green wedding with a touch of style and panache… The Martine Inn, built in 1899, was purchased in 1901 by Laura and James Parke who entertained dignitaries in their home.

An experienced wedding consultant is on staff to assist with every detail. Spring, Victorian and fresh herbal bouquets provide style and color to match the bride’s requirements. Music for the wedding and reception can be with a harpist, string quartet, chamber music, piano or band.  Festive decorations, minister of choice, Food and drinks are available. The food is freshly prepared in the kitchen with recipes from the original 1880’s White House cookbooks. Meals are served with all of the flair, pomp and circumstance, amidst the finest Victorian and Old Sheffield silver pieces, china and crystal. From 50-100 guests can be accommodated in 25 rooms, three overlooking the ocean, when booking the entire Inn.

From the antique furniture in every room, to the breakfast served as if every guest were a guest of the Mr and Mrs. Parke, the Martine Inn is a place of luxury and dignity…

Intimate conferences, workshops and seminars are also held at the Martine Inn, Dole Pineapple, Discover Card, Hewlett Packard and Xerox are some of the firms that have held corporate meetings here at the Martine Inn, along with a host of international companies. Each of the six different private conference areas has a unique interior design and six meeting rooms have been specifically planned to inspire creative thought.  Elegant 12-course meals can be served.  Off site activities such as whale watching, scuba diving, golf, picnic on the beach, kayaking, bicycling, tennis, historical tours and nature hikes enhance the conference experience and can all be arranged.

Car buffs

Don Martine has an extensive collection of vintage MG’s that he races and a display of the cars are located in the rear of the carriage house.

Some history

The original main house, a carriage house and two other buildings was established on two and one half blocks and contained 59 rooms. The house was a true Victorian with a cupola, dormers and grape arbors. Remodeling was constant.

In 1972, Norah and Home Martine assisted their son Don in purchasing the Parke estate. Twelve years later, Don renovated the grand mansion and replaced worn out plumbing, installed new heating with individual room controls and replaced wiring. All of the fixtures are authentic and rooms are furnished with turn of the century antiques. Careful attention has been given to restoring the fine Victorian interior details including push button light switches, claw foot tubs, brass fixtures, marble sinks… Paint was removed from the mahogany and oak trim.

The inn opened in 1984 after the completion of the game room and spa. The spa is located in the conservatory where flowers were grown for the house. Period artwork is displayed to add to the authentic ambience of the inn. Sally Parke, sister of James, was trained in Paris and known as a renowned early California landscape artist. Some of her paintings are shown in the Parlor.

Today…

I am in the Walnut room in the courtyard. Quiet, peaceful and relaxing.  opening my doors onto the courtyard garden which is filled with flowers and a rock made to look like a mushroom…  the inn is not pet friendly so cc is not with me… I have the bed to myself, luxurious !

http://www.martineinn.com/walnut.html

The last time I was here, I stayed in the Cottage room with an ocean view and there was a wedding with reception in the library.

Lovely amenities to spare:

You have your own private bath; most have clawfoot bathtubs.

Garden Room FireplaceMany rooms have views of the waves crashing against the rocks and/or wood burning fireplaces. Maries Room Mirror

You may luxuriate in the soft bathrobes we provide in your room.

You have a fresh rose in a silver vase.

You have a private phone, clock radio and hairdryer.

There is a refrigerator with complimentary bottled water; soda is available upon request…

Breakfast was delicious, freshly cooked scrambled eggs with hollandaise sauce, apple sauce muffins, sausage, granola or baked pear, juices, coffee, tea and more. While eating, you can watch the sea animals such as sea lions, otters and dolphins swimming in the ocean. We saw a huge school of dolphins frolicking this morning along with some sea lions sunbathing on the rocks.

I fell down after taking cc to Carmel beach yesterday on the steps coming up, and am recovering…
