scoop on Patrick hearing

Patrick’s Legal Update on 4/23/12: NJSPCA filed multiple animal cruelty charges in March of 2011 against Kisha Curtis. The charges against Curtis were upgraded to more serious charges and the prosecution of the case than was shifted over to the Essex County Prosecutors Office. There have been numerous delays and postponements but the case continues to move forward. Many Defendants request PTI but the odds of Kisha Curtis being successful requesting PTI are very low. NJSPCA will continue to stay focused on the Prosecution of Kisha Curtis and will continue to work with the Essex County Prosecutors Office to that end. NJSPCA also appluads the statements made by Judge Cassini that Patrick is well taken care of and “That Patrick survived is a miracle” and that “Patrick has bonded with his caretakers and his environment” Strong words for a strong dog… Please focus on the animals. Capt

well, it seems that AHS has been busy getting in the way with more papers filed still trying to get their greedy paws on Patrick… but the LOVE prevails…

To All: No progress with the Kisha Curtis Criminal case today as the time was spent on AHS’s third (3rd) Brief / Motion that was filed about one month ago, again seeking custody of Patrick. As with the first two requests this was also denied by the Judge who ruled it premature. Patrick will continue to stay with the Scavelli’s until the conclusion of the Criminal case and at that time the Court will rule on Patrick’s permanent custody which the NJSPCA believes should be the Scavelli’s. The next Court date will be posted here when we get it. Capt

from GSVS Hospital

Patrick will remain in our foster care pending the outcome of the criminal case. The Judge in his decision today said that he was satisfied that Patrick was doing well and had no intention of changing his foster care placement at this time.

Judge Cassini on Patrick’s case: “If it isn’t broken, don’t try to fix it…”

http://www.nj.com/news/index.ssf/2012/04/judge_patrick_the_pit_bull_hap_2.html

an anonymous source said,

I thought that you all would appreciate knowing some things from the hearing today.

Some of you may have seen the report on NJ News 12 tonight, but from my notes…

The Judge said, at the outset, that he would not discuss the criminal case today, but instead, would focus on AHS’ petition for possession of Patrick. KC was not in the courtroom.

Harry Levin (AHS’ attorney) acknowledged that, since there has been no adjudication in the Curtis matter AHS’ petition for possession of Patrick is “premature”, but asked that AHS be given an opportunity to hold an “inspection” of Patrick “by experts, to ensure that his circumstance is satisfactory”.

The assistant prosecutor was very strong, and argued that the state is satisfied that Patrick is being well cared for, and that since AHS is not a party to the criminal matter they have no right to inspect Patrick or his circumstance.

The Judge read, for the record, his synopsis of the case thus far, which included the words “Kisha Curtis is still the lawful owner of Patrick” (which is, sadly, the truth). But the Judge also said “I found that AHS does not have any possessive interest in Patrick”. (Happily, that is also the truth, and his finding was upheld by the appellate division).

The Judge also said that it is clear that Patrick is “loved” and well cared for, and that there is “no evidence” that Patrick is in any jeopardy and no reason to believe otherwise. The Judge further said that to allow an inspection of Patrick by AHS would be to “interfere with the custody of Patrick”.

The Judge then said “The question here is about AHS’ fidelity and integrity…what is the nature of AHS? It was a miracle that Patrick survived and is in excellent health, happy and healthy. Patrick is living a life that AHS should hope for every pet. My belief is that if it is not broken, don’t try to fix it”.

I hope that what happened in court today will give you all, as it does me, continued reason for optimism. The assistant prosecutor was excellent, and the Judge is clearly sympathetic to Patrick as a living being. The Judge sees Patrick as more than just “property”, of that I am sure.

and meanwhile, Kisha Curtis wants a pre-trial intervention

wild about cici

I get emails from folks wanting me to hawk their products all the time, from dog food to books that have nothing to do with dogs to all sorts of weird and sundry items. A few months ago, someone said they would send me a gift t-shirt but they did not have my size in any of the t-shirts I picked out. Never heard from them again.

So then I get an email from Deborah from Three Dogz products. And I was cranky as usual. But she persevered kindly and invited me to go to her website and pick out a t-shirt that she would send to me as a sample. After going back and forth via email with questions, I finally picked out a color and a saying I liked. She said that she would send along a little something extra, too.

Imagine my surprise then when I received a package that was like dog mom xmas in july… not only did she send me one t-shirt, not two, not three, but FOUR t-shirts, two organic ones, with various sayings, one polka dotty one with Wild About Cici on it, customized, in other words, plus a mouse pad and a matching coffee/tea coaster (smaller one). Plus there was “Just Enough” Paw Print Tissue for gift bags as well as the “Ribbon by the Yard”. “The Wild About Cici” shirt (which comes with a matching doggie shirt) was sent with a matching window decal and a couple of bandanas for Cici so we could match!  Talk about going the extra mile.  Four paws up !

I love her website, too. It is very user friendly and has lots of options to choose from, with a bunch of different colors to sizes to sayings. And all sorts of items. There are even breed specific love t-shirts and products. And t-shirts for doggie dads, too.

And the shirts are nice quality and fit.  Look at this one…

What are you waiting for? Check it out.  And tell Deborah that Cici and I sent you.

www.THREEDOGZLLC.com

I’m just wild about Cici, she’s not being so wild about me, but that’s another story… if/when some time today I can get the most awesome polka dot princess in the universe to wear her bandana and pose for a photo, I will post it right here so that I can utilize the photo for tonight’s Saturday Blog Hop … or not, we shall see… she has not been very cooperative this week…ok here is the bug, best I could do,

anyway, did you hear about the coyote who went into the Quizno’s store in Orange county (near LA)? On the news last night… must have been a boycotting Subway coyote, k9 solidarity !!!

well, Cici, August 1 is her birthday and she will be FIVE YEARS OLD already… created a wish list at Giving Paw if anyone wants to give her a gift, she would love a new collar, leash, bed and so on… thanks !

Now it is time for the Saturday Blog Hop, so here we go, hopping thanks to Life with Dogs, Two Little Cavaliers, and Confessions from the Plume and catch the code here

Waking up on the woof side…

Loyal and faithful customers say bow wow to personable, friendly service

The LaQuinta Orange County chain hotel is very conveniently located near to the John Wayne airport (5-10 minutes), they offer an airport shuttle service and you can leave your car in their parking lot and it will be here when you return. The inn is business class AND they also offer pet friendly lodging. Need to bring your bird, cat, rabbit, ferret, or dog on a business trip? No problemo !

we stayed on the top floor (third), above the heated pool and jacuzzi in a king suite, with fridge, microwave, king size bed, couch, desk, nicely furnished, with wireless, free local phone calls and TV… The rooms (183, all of which are pet friendly) and lobby are very clean and comfy. We received a nice box of chocolates, good for me, not for cici… no dog treats but four times a year, when there are dog shows in town, the pets receive pet goodie bags and the inn is sold out.

During the week, most of the guests are business people traveling to and from southern California but on the weekend, visitors are more family oriented. The Magic Kingdom (Disneyland) is only 15 minutes away and the inn is four miles from shopping malls, (The District with shops such as Pet Smart), post office, banks, fast food and several restaurants. The Inn also has four meeting rooms for business conferences and workshops.

In the area, there are numerous pet shops, pet sitters, doggie daycare and groomers as well as dog trainers.

LaQuinta also provides a delicious hot and cold breakfast with hard boiled eggs, fresh hot waffles, muffins, cereals, juice, donuts, yogurt, and hot coffee from 6 – 9 am.

this hotel is budget conscious and a great value for the pricey area near Newport Beach. Other hotels in the area do not offer pet friendly lodging. A couple of lower priced motels do but the service and amenities are nowhere near the quality that LaQuinta offers. In this economy, why not receive the best barks for the bucks. Cici says four paws up !

tuscany manor resort…

The Tuscany Manor offers 1 and 2 bedroom suites with kitchens, and all the modern amenities including wireless Internet. Each suite is appointed with southwestern decor and cable television.

All of the suites are located around the courtyard which offers views of the heated pool and spa plus BBQ.  Enjoy the fragrant flowers, or take a dip in the hot tub after a day of golf or shopping.

This is a nice place for an affordable home away from home family vacation or business retreat, family reunion, girlfriends getaway, mancation and more. Located a few minutes away from the busy downtown area, the peace and quiet is very relaxing and your dog will enjoy the grassy lawns inside and outside the gate. A safe place to walk your pooch.

Can you save money on gas by organizing your car?

Can your cat or pooch help you get organized?  Well, Cici has a new boyfriend that looks almost exactly like her, spots in the same places and same color ears, he’s a Lab pit mix, 8 months old and will have photos soon… they had a blast together at the new dog park we just found…

Meanwhile, in the process of moving I have discovered that disorganization can lead to crisis purchasing and unnecessary spending. Everybody is looking for ways to save money these days, especially on gas. How much money are you spending by not keeping an organization system for your pets in your car?

Just as travelers load up the car to go camping with essentials such as flashlights, batteries, matches, tents, sleeping bags, coolers, first aid kits, and other camping supplies, pet owners can save money keeping pet items handy and easily accessible in their car.

Linda Hecht (no relation) spent an extra $35.36 on crisis purchases without her organizer. Money spent unnecessarily.

She created the Hecht of an Organizer® for use in her vehicle in 2004 but I just found out about it.

http://www.hechtofanorganizer.com

“Having a car organizer reduces duplicate purchases. With receipts in the car, you can return purchases. With stamps in your car organizer, you don’t have to buy extra stamps when you go to the post office. Keeping coupons in the car, you can save money with discounts on products.

“By applying the three tips of organizing and using a versatile and flexible organizer, you can create an organization system that works specifically for you and your lifestyle,” she explains.

Three organizing tips:

Group like items together

Give items a home

Make the items you use most often easy and accessible

In addition, she suggests ten ways to save money through keeping an organizer filled with files and supplies in your car.

1)       Emergency kit including disposable camera, gloves and first aid kit. In case of an accident, you can provide on scene photos as proof for claims.  The first aid kit could include items such as flea, tick spray, hydrogen peroxide, Rescue Remedy for shock and trauma, medications, supplements, healing ointments, and other  essentials.

2)      Spare keys. Lost keys can cost a lot of money and time. Why spend money for a locksmith.  AAA provides an extra plastic key for members.

3)      Consolidate shopping trips.  Buy pet food online and have it delivered, take the dog to the vet, groomer and to the pet store in the same mall or vicinity.

4)      Keep a contact list with you (the vet, groomer, pet store where you get treats, toys, pet daycare provider, pet sitters, and other pet related places) in your organizer which reduces fees for calling information, 411 calls. You can call 1-800-goog-411 to retrieve phone numbers, but this can take time if you want to call a few people and not everyone is listed. Have a phone card, batteries and an extra charger in case of loss of power to electronic gadgets.

5)      Reduce and/or eliminate crisis purchases by keeping pet items in your organizer. You could keep extra cans of pet food, dry food, leash, collar, plastic bags, gloves, toys, treats, bones, and other items.

6)      Keep receipts so you can return purchased items and for tax purposes.

7)      Families who share cars can prevent extra trips retrieving articles left in their spouse’s car.

8)      Turn wasted time into productive time.  Keep letterhead, postcards, notebooks, and stamps in the car so you can catch up on reading, letter writing, and writing thank you notes while waiting to pick up kids from practice or classes or waiting for the vet.

9)      Have coupons on hand for the car wash, bottled water, and dog bakery and chain stores.

10)   Keep spare change just in case.

11)  File copies of documents such as vaccination and vet medical and dental history, evidence of ownership, and other records in the car organizer for easy access.

Linda Hecht invented the Hecht of an Organizer® in 2004  to help keep her organized while she traveled for her job over several states in her car. She wanted a product that was durable, portable, attractive and, most importantly, would keep her papers and office supplies organized in her car, but she couldn’t find anything that fit the bill. Today, with the Hecht of an Organizer®, you can save time and reduce stress, as well as stretch your dollars by making fewer trips and saving money on gas.

The Hecht of an Organizer® is great for Pet Owners, Teachers, Real Estate Agents, Artists, Busy Moms, Entrepreneurs, Sales Reps, Writers and others…

tripe: it’s not just for cows anymore…

tripe, it’s what’s for dinner, not…

http://www.drharveys.com/dogs/index.asp

I had heard about Dr. Harvey’s dog food and we just received a few samples… Cici was very excited… and could not wait for me to rip the package open and give her a treat… although she already ate breakfast, a kangaroo treat in her kong, and a couple strips of turkey bacon… I deliberated and decided I would give her one little Power Pattie, which looked small and harmless… hah!  she has been barking at me ever since and whining to give her more more and more… I finally gave in and gave her another one… boy, did she gobble it up… (and she is usually not that into treats so much)…

I had not read what tripe is, sounds kinda yucko to my human sensibilities, Beef tripe is usually made from only the first three of a cow‘s four stomach chambers, doesn’t that sound yummy, ugh, but I would say that the proof is in the woofs and tail wagging !

the warning is absolutely true…

  • WARNING: Dogs and Cats love Power Patties so much that they are apt to steal the whole bag. Power Patties should be placed in a carefully chosen and concealed place. Dr. Harvey’s will not be responsible for stolen or captured Power Patties. Also, please be aware that giving Power Patties may result in overwhelming amounts of joy and kisses. Now you can’t say we didn’t warn you!

Cici also taste tested the Veg-to-bowl food.  You soup it up and add it to the regular dog food… she slurped it up along with her dry food… left some in the bowl and came back to it later… guess she was a little full from being a little piggy all day…   it is great to know that she is getting some veggies, because she doesn’t like to eat them raw or otherwise usually…

Here are the ingredients:

Sweet Potatoes*, Carrots*, Diced Potatoes*, Zucchini*, Broccoli Florets*, Green Beans*, Peas**, Beets*, Parsley, Fennel Seed, Fenugreek Seed, Garlic, Ginger, Papaya Leaf and Peppermint Leaf

* Dehydrated ** Freeze Dried

And there is a healing and first aid cream, to put on her skin, too… she sure needs that…

would love to try the canine herbal tea and bee pollen and have a tea party with Cici and some doggie friends one of these days…

also have some parrot food and kitty cat treats… those will be given away to some lucky birds and cats…

All in all, Cici and I give a tail wagging woof woof FOUR PAWS UP to Dr. Harvey’s, K9 approved dog food and treats…

Blue Dog and Planet Dog, saga of the leash, toy and treats…

Tug toy (Planet Dog)

Cici took her time getting to know this toy but now she loves playing tug of war and chewing on it. Planet Dog says not to let your dog chew on them but my dog chews up everything. So she also loves to chew her tug toy maybe because of the fresh minty flavor. We hid a turkey hot dog inside of it and she spent hours licking and chewing it and it held up very well. She has been playing with it for more than a week now and it is still in good shape. This is important because my dog goes through chew toys usually in an hour (except for her Kong, balls, and raw bones). Cici approved and tested. Four paws up !

photo-99.jpg

Retractable Zip leash (Planet Dog)

Upon opening the package, I was expecting the kind of retractable leash one finds in the stores, with a heavy (bulky) plastic handle and sturdy line. This zip leash has a soft cloth to wrap around your wrist which makes it easier. It only extends to 10 feet (the one I used before extended to 20 feet). My dog is medium-sized and weighs 53 pounds. We tried the leash out on a few walks and it was ok, but I did not feel that I had enough control. There is a clasp to reign her in, but my dog likes to sniff and run around and tried to run across the street and I was afraid the leash might break even though it seems very strong. It says on the package to use the leash with a well-trained dog. Well, Cici has her own ideas about where she should go and what she should do. And with the tether I have been using, I can stomp down on it and stop her. But with the zip leash, I reigned her in but was afraid it could snap. It’s possible that I should have opted for the Large for 100 pound dogs, maybe those are sturdier. There is a guarantee that if you are not happy, you can return the leash. With the other retractable leash I used, I felt in control and could reign her in with no worries. This zip leash comes in small, medium and large. Cici approved and tested. Three paws up !

Live Well dog treats (Super Premium, low fat) by Blue Dog Bakery

I like that these treats are made with a lot of antioxidants, fruits and veggies such as carrots, sweet potatoes, peanut butter, apples, broccoli, spinach, and barley flour. I thought that these treats were wheat-free but they are made with wheat flour and barley flour. She gobbles them up. Cici approved and tested. Three paws up
