Just say YES!

If you are looking for more love in your life and a special love at that, why not adopt Vicktory Dog Mya. She is finally ready for her forever home!!! Mel’s dad Richard Hunter has graciously offered to talk with anyone serious about adopting Mya, since she is a lot like Mel, for some special insight. Please share and help this precious little lady find her forever home. *ALL links you need to apply are on the site, and Miss Mya IS cat friendly.

25189707-1-largeSANCTUARY VISIT REQUIRED* Mya was born in 2006 and was only 2 when she came to Best Friends. Though she is nervous around strangers, and may bark at them at first, she will wag her tail and accept treats and petting once she gets to know you a little bit. Her shyness hasn’t kept her from having fun on walks and car rides. She also enjoys playing with toys and napping on a nice, soft, dog bed. And when it comes to other dogs, Mya has no trouble making friends! She even helps to socialize some of the puppies here! Cats seem to be no problem either; she has met and hung out with a few of them. Mya is ready for a home of her own. Do you think you might want to meet her?

like oscar, she is shy with people, but really comes out of her shell with her dog friends.

http://bestfriends.org/Adopt-A-Pet/Sanctuary-Animals/Search/Dog/25189707/

when i first met Vdog Ginger in 2009 or 2010, she was very shy too hiding in her crate away from people but boy has she blossomed the last few years. Thanks to all of the love, patience and compassion of her family, Ginger even went on a couple of pit bull walks, with LOTS of strangers. she has traveled and moved from Central California to New Orleans, and made other great strides.  If you are up to the task of becoming one of a very unique group of dog guardians, am sure that you will be welcomed with open paws and arms.

And if you have not ever been to Best Friends sanctuary in Kanab, Utah, you are in for a REAL TREAT. Ir is GORGEOUS, all those thousands of acres of magical red rocks, people and animals, too… the scenery is divine, oh mya What are you waiting for ???

and the saga continues… Obama, can you hear us?

update:

Good News: The White House has not rejected the books… it takes days for approval, need to be radiated etc…. Can’t wait for them to get the 200+ Lost Dogs on their desk!!!

Apparently some people’s Lost Dogs books were returned from the White House.  200+ books were sent including one by the author Jim Gorant.

I called the White House this morning and was told that they discourage sending gifts, in general and cannot confirm or deny whether gifts were received. they also said that the books that were sent back probably did not pass their security protocol, whatever that is or means.

I suggest that people send poochecards with the lost dog book jpg on the front cover to the President to get the message across. if enough people do this, it will have impact.  I also suggest that you write letters to the editor of your local newspaper.  If you do, please let me know. Thanks for all you do.

there is a contact form to send to obama or you could print out the cards and mail them to him. he receives 50,000 letters a day, why not add to the pile?

202-456-1414, call white house

http://poochecards.com/CardViewer.aspx?CardID=d75654ad-5eb8-465e-a209-cfef3e281b0c

I also sent out a press release today and posted it here:

http://pitbullpositive.ning.com/profiles/blogs/lost-dogs-muzzled-by-the-white

There are 77.5 million dogs in the United States. Millions of voters of President Obama are dog owners. Two hundred-plus lost dogs were sent to the White House but some of them have been turned away. President Obama has a lot on his plate, especially with the events in Tucson. However, many voters feel strongly that he needs to address this issue, also related to violence in our nation…

I was just was informed about this debacle last night… you might want to send your returned books to these ignorant people… am going to issue another press release about the lessons our children are learning… ie, if/when you are rich and famous and can play football, you can do all manner of despicable cruel things including fight dogs, kill them with your bare hands, drown and electrocute them, and never show any remorse, and voila, you are a hero…

I suggest that if Vick wanted to prove himself, that he l. go on Barbara Walters with author Jim Gorant, Donna Reynolds from BADRAP and Francis Battista from Best Friends Animal Society and tell the American people in detail exactly specifically in all the gory details what he did.  If/when that ever happens, maybe people will forgive him. Chance of that happening, zero.

2. that he donate a BIG chunk of change, millions of dollars of his OWN FREE WILL to the pit bull rescue organizations who took care and are taking care of the dogs he brutalized.  Chance of that happening, zero.

3. Clean up dog poop for the rest of his life. Chance of that, zero.

Pit bull mix attacked by Beagle

I live for the day this type of story is commonplace and makes the news.  It makes me ill to constantly see “news” stories that report that pit bulls mauled somebody or their dog. This story below is actually based upon an experience Cici and I had just yesterday. And Cici has been attacked at least five or six times. After she was thrown down on her back, throat attacked, blood drawn, Cici still wanted to play with the dog that attacked her. After her head was bitten by another vicious dog, she still has scars, she did not thankfully want to play with that dog.  Sometimes I think she is too forgiving. Don’t know if the dog yesterday was actually a Beagle because it was sort of old and brown and mangy looking. But suffice it to say that these types of stories never get reported, ever. Not now. But maybe someday they will.

Woman saves her pit bull mix from beagle attack

The Astute Press
SEASIDE, Ca. — A Seaside woman was walking her pit bull mix dog down San Pablo Street going to the store on Noche Buena when an 8 year old mangy-looking Beagle attacked her dog through an old dilapidated wooden fence. The owner of the Beagle apologized for his “overprotective” dog.  “He’s just an old guard dog doing his duty,” said the neighbor.

The Seaside Sheriff’s Office reports that 61-year-old Sue Grace was wary of walking on that side of the street because the Beagle had viciously tried to attack her dog once before. But the owner of the Beagle insisted that his dog was safe. She proceeded to the other side of the street after the man closed the fence door leaving the Beagle behind it. But as she and her pit bull mix proceeded down the street and passed the fence, the Beagle went crazy Wednesday afternoon.

Grace quickly pulled her dog away and went on her way. Her pit bull mix had been wagging its tail and wanting to play with the Beagle. But the Beagle growled viciously and tried to bite the pit bull through the fence.  Her dog, Cici, whines every time she goes by the street.  She still wants to play with the mean old Beagle.

In the past three years, 4 year old Cici has been attacked by a nasty Shiz Tzu, Cairn Terrier, mutt of unknown origin who got her by her throat drawing blood at a dog park, two Labrador retrievers, an unsocialized Jack Russell, Cocker Spaniel, and a Border Collie. She has played nicely with more than 600 dogs of many different sizes and breeds including poodles, Yorkies, German Shepherds, Rottweilers, Doberman Pinschers, Dalmatians (she is part Dalmatian), Boxers, Great Dane, hound dog, Golden Retrievers (her favorite), Labradoodles, an Australian Shepherd she loved the most and many others.

Animal control does nothing about dogs unless they are pit bulls or pit bull mixes. The pit bulls and pit bull mixes are blamed for the wrongdoing of other dog breeds such as malevolent Beagles even though American Pit Bull Terrier and American Staffordshire Terrier’s temperament testing studies have concluded that Beagles, Lassie (collies) and Toto dogs (cairn terriers) tested with scores below that of the Pit Bull breeds and mixes.

http://www.atts.org/stats2.html

The American Temperament Testing Society (ATTS) conducts annual evaluations for all dog breeds, and pit bull mixes consistently rate higher than some of their more popular counterparts, including the Golden Retriever and Collie. Bully breeds also excel at the American Kennel Club’s (AKC) Canine Good Citizen (CGC) training, which is a program that teaches good dog manners and responsible pet ownership.

According to the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA), many dogs involved in attacks are incorrectly identified as bullies in media reports, which fuels the belief these breeds are always to blame. But the Center for Disease Control reports that the chow chow, German shepherd, Rottweiler and even the Yorkshire terrier have all been responsible for fatal attacks throughout the years, so it’s not a breed-specific problem.

Six US presidents have had bullies.
The executive pooch to Theodore Roosevelt was a bull terrier named Pete, but Pete wasn’t the only bully to garner good favor with a commander in chief. Calvin Coolidge, Franklin D. Roosevelt, Warren Harding, Woodrow Wilson and Jimmy Carter have all called a bully breed their First Dog.

Nanny dogs
Bully breeds such as the Staffordshire bull terrier have a long history of being good with children and are often called “Nanny Dogs” in England thanks to their sweet and nurturing demeanor around kids. Bullies that are well-socialized and properly cared for are generally wonderful pets for children, as they are able to handle any rough-housing and are drawn to kids’ carefree dispositions.

can pit bulls even be heroes? yes, say many people who know and love them.

And the lesson learned from the supposedly most vicious dogs from Michael Vick’s Bad Newz Kennels have taught many is that even fighting dogs can become good canine citizens, therapy dogs and service dogs.

Mean Dogs Not

The Lost Dogs book written by Jim Gorant is a powerful cannot put it down page turner. Read with heart held in hands, afraid to breathe, pet lovers cannot help but share the deep sadness and impact of the blood soaked brutality forced upon 51 innocent dogs portrayed on every page and the scars most still bear to this day. It is not an easy task to write a book like this but Gorant does so superbly. The way he interweaves the stories of the little brown dog, the little red dog and other dogs from the dog’s perspective, giving descriptions of the places intertwined with the facts of how the case was built against NFL football player Michael Vick and Michael Vick’s Bad Newz Kennels is just plain riveting.

These dogs faced a triple whammy: they were unsocialized, heavily chained up 24/7, with inhumane contact as their normal. They did not know the basics of being an average house pet. On top of that, they were cruelly traumatized by their vicious training at Bad Newz and bore the pit bull stigma. Considered violent “biting machine menaces” ready to kill at any time, these dogs were truly lost in a nightmarish reality not of their own making. So terrified of people, places and normal things we take for granted, some became catatonic and afraid of everything. They would hunker down and hide. For some reason, a lot of the dogs had issues with doorways and crossing any threshold was nearly impossible.  They did not even know what to do with toys.  Many were clumsy, uncoordinated puppylike in grown up dog bodies.

Of all of the dogs, only one had to be euthanized due to her being so overbred, forced to bear puppies, that she lost her mind. A couple of others were put down due to illness.

Ginger, Red and Stella were taken in by the Monterey SPCA…  Update: Red has since passed from cancer.  My original post about my visit to the SPCA to meet the dogs.  https://celiasue.wordpress.com/2009/08/22/survivor-dogs/

There was a joke on Twitter recently about Vick being injured and unable to play so now he should be put down.  One wonders what kind of a monster could not only order the deaths of dogs by electocution and drowning but also kill dogs with his own bare hands. Dogs were murdered because they would not fight and/or did not pass muster in the fighting ring.

But this book is not about Vick. The Lost Dogs story proves without a shadow of a doubt that pit bulls are not the dogs society has been brainwashed to believe they are. Their heroic survival makes their recovery, redemption and rehabilitation all the more remarkable. Even the animal rights groups and experts expected that maybe 10% of the dogs, five of the dogs would become adoptable. That many of the dogs have not only passed the Basic Obedience course training but several have gone on to become therapy dogs, earned their Canine Good Citizen certificates and are thriving in new homes with children, other dogs and cats, is nothing short of a miracle and a testament to the pit bull’s spirit. Loyal, loving goofballs with seemingly boundless optimism, most adore children and people as they were bred to do.   And the patience, compassion and persistence of their caretakers is an utter inspiration. Love truly does conquer all.

Hector, one of the Lost dogs, at the recent No More Homeless Pets conference, from Best Friends…not a great photo but a great dog !!!

the lost dogs

the Lost Dogs tells the story of the 51 pit bulls taken from Michael Vick’s dogfighting operation. It’s a tale of persistence and hope that shines a light on the human-canine bond and the power of compassion.

strings attached…

my cute funny pretty girl gets compliments all of the time, whenever we go out anywhere… people see her funny antics, licking feet, rolling over onto her back and showing off her belly and talking to them if they don’t pay attention to her and ignore her and they laugh, smile and give her love back.  They tell me they love her markings and sometimes, we get weird offers… yesterday, we went for a walk to a nearby store and I had to leave her outside for a minute. There was a guy outside collecting money for charity and I asked him to watch her for me. He agreed. When I got back, he told me somebody came along and wanted Cici’s babies and/or he wanted to buy Cici… I’ve had people offer me money for her before. And tell me that they want her babies. She was fixed when I first met her at six months old. She is not going to have any babies. I shudder at the thought of what these people might do to this sweet dog if I sold her to them. It seems obvious to me that they want to make money off of her. I have no problem with that per se, but not at her expense. And from the stories about the Michael Vick dogs, there are too many people out there who seek to benefit from pit bulls and pit bull mixes even if it harms the dog. So, no, thank you.  Sure, I could REALLY use the bucks, and would love for Cici to be able to earn her keep, but I am not willing to sacrifice this good baby girl for the almighty dollar. She is not a money making machine. She is not a cash cow. She is a dog, a friend, my companion.

What a dog is a furry family member… loyal, devoted, faithful… a puppy pillow, a heater on cold nights… funny girl…

What a dog isn’t is a baby making factory, fighter, nor something to use to make money.   Thank goodness for people like Best Friends Animal Sanctuary who are taking care of the Michael Vick dogs who were abused and exploited and traumatized for the sake of selfish greed.  Recently, I read that one of them, Oscar, earned his Good Canine Citizenship certificate with flying colors and is ready to be adopted, that is so great !

grooving on a Sunday afternoon … rolling in the grass is a gas…

we have been in oregon for the past week, came here to escape the smoke and instead got right in the thick of it… finally, the smoke left the air for the holiday and it’s been clear this weekend… and Cici has been having fun in this dog friendly place… there is a dog trail and dog park a short hop skip and a jump, in walking distance to where we are staying.  Every day she has met, played with and encountered other dogs.

Yesterday morning, however, this man drives up at 6-7 am on a Sunday morning with all of these dogs yowling… we were just stumbling along, well, I was, half awake, Cici was rollling on the grass, stalking squirrels and sniffing around… the guy almost ran us over, got out of his car and I asked him if he saw us and he said yes, duh… then he said that he was going to let eight that is 8 dogs out, could we please leave, the nerve !!!  I am paying a fortune to stay in this place and he comes there with his eight dogs…we left though… did not want Cici to get ganged up on by a bunch of crazy dogs… like their owner…

then we ventured into the dog park, too many dogs there, but she did find one friend, a black lab who she chased and played with for a few minutes… then I whisked her away…

doggie heaven…  they love her at the bank and feed her treats… mostly, people here have been wonderful regarding her but on occasion, there are those who are still afraid of dogs and/or pit bulls…

The Washington Post apparently did a wonderful photo gallery of the Michael Vick dogs rehabed and sheltered at various animal sanctuaries including Best Friends in Kanab Utah and Bad Rap in northern California…

here’s the link and a few other links… the other day this guy in a laundromat asked me if my dog had a locking jaw, I was stunned… cici was wagging her tail, kissing feet and doing her usual social butterfly routine and he wanted to know about her locking jaw… there is no such thing as a locking jaw… it is a myth (see below, there is a link to myths about pit bulls)… the jaws of pit bulls are the same as any other dog, K9, period end of story…  otherwise intelligent people believe this baloney… media hype and hysteria about super dogs…  yeah, she’s a super dog all right… super smart, super friendly, super silly, super loving, and super playful…

Myths

“Pit Bulls have locking jaws.” The jaws of the Pit Bull are functionally the same as the jaws of any other breed, and this has been proven via expert examination.

The few studies which have been conducted of the structure of the skulls, mandibles and teeth of Pit Bulls show that, in proportion to their size, their jaw structure and thus its inferred functional morphology, is no different than that of any [other] breed of dog. There is absolutely not evidence for the existence of any kind of ’locking mechanism’ unique to the structure of the jaw and/or teeth of the American Pit Bull Terrier, says Dr. I. Lerh Brisbin of the University of Georgia (from the ADBA booklet, “Discover the American Pit Bull Terrier.)
