Double trouble

Cici has a doppelganger (look alike)… see below photos… Her name is Hazel from Our Pack rescue. She was recently adopted. Isn’t she a cutie pie? She even has the spot on her forehead and polka dot ear that Cici has plus a black splotch on her rear and other polka dot spots. And she loves to play, too.

World Animal Day

Today is the feast day of St Francis of Assisi, patron saint of animals. St Francis was renowned for his relationship with animals, famously brokering a peace between the townspeople of Gubbio, Italy, and a local wolf. Many churches take the opportunity to bless pets around this feast day.

World Animal Day is celebrated each year on October the 4th. It started in Florence, Italy in 1931 at a convention of ecologists.[1] On this day, animal life in all its forms is celebrated, and special events are planned in locations all over the globe. The 4th of October was originally chosen for World Animal Day because it is the feast day of Francis of Assisi.

There are still many people who think that dogs are nothing more than security alarms – people who keep the animals  chained up in yards, like living doorbells.

And there is the blight known as BSL…and too many healthy animals are killed in shelters, dog fighting, animal abuse, etc.

Animals are precious and we are their voice.

If you have a pet, dog or cat or rabbit or bird or fish, whatever, you know that they are special and bring lots of love and often entertainment into your home.

My Cici aka polka dot princess does often with her silly antics. As did my cats Precious and Abundance.  Pets not only make our world furrier but also funnier. Love and enjoy them while you can.

Celebrate World Animal Day !!!!

there is even a blog hop…

Yucca Valley dogs

I saw this article on Life with Dogs, a blog I LOVE LOVE LOVE… and once again, innocent dogs to be euthanized TODAY… oh no, not another Lennox, Wicca story…

http://www.lifewithdogs.tv/2012/09/veterans-dogs-to-be-euthanized-by-the-town-of-yucca-valley/

except the town is Yucca Valley, which made it more personal to me since I used to live/work in 29 Palms, 20 minutes from there… so I thought I’d snoop around and find out what was going on and if I could possibly do ANYTHING to save these dogs and innocent puppies…

“Yucca Valley is a small town in the California’s Mojave Desert and located a half-hour’s drive north of Palm Springs. Its residents consist of a mix of military families stationed at the base in neighboring Twentynine Palms, retirees who can’t quite afford Palm Springs real estate but want to live near by, and those adventurists who prefer to trade paved roads, postage stamp-sized lots and street lights for wide-open spaces, clear blue skies by day and a billion stars at night and being lulled to sleep by the sound of a howling coyote.”

http://www.examiner.com/article/town-of-yucca-valley-to-euthanize-veteran-s-dogs

Went to Hi-Desert Star newspaper page and there was NO STORY about this there today so I called them up and spoke to a reporter there.

Courtney told me that they did a story about it a month ago and she had talked to Animal Control folks earlier today. She said they told her that there was NOT going to be any dogs put to sleep today. And she gave me the Animal Control folks phone number so I could speak to them myself.

http://www.hidesertstar.com/opinion/article_0748a79a-ec2b-11e1-8368-0019bb2963f4.html

I spoke to Melanie and she told me that the puppies were born LAST WEEK (the article said last night) and that there are NO plans to euthanize the dogs or puppies.  She also told me to talk to the Town of Yucca Valley for the whole scoop.

I asked both Melanie and Jim why the dogs Dakota and Blaze were not spayed/neutered and they said that the dogs are considered the owner’s property and that they are not allowed to spay and neuter them. I said that the town can confiscate them but not spay/neuter them? Jim said that would have been an additional cost, too. I said that since the dogs were considered dangerous that a BIG factor in dogs biting and attacking is being intact. He reiterated that the city could not spay/neuter the dogs since they are the property of the owner.

Jim Schooler said that the dogs are considered dangerous and not adoptable since they attacked an elderly woman. However, the dogs and puppies can be returned to the owner as soon as the owner becomes in compliance.

To be in compliance, the owner, JR Lovell, needs to reimburse the town for all of the fees incurred and maintaining the dogs, a bill of about $3,800…

and show proof of an enclosure, dogs must be leashed, and he must obtain insurance for the dogs.

According to the Judge’s order issued on August 22nd, the owner had 14 days, which would be today, September 5th to come into compliance.

However, there is no plan in the works to euthanize the dogs YET.

Legally, once the dogs become the property of the town to do what is necessary, because they’re considered dangerous, they will be euthanized if the owner does not comply with the terms. However, the town is concerned about the puppies and do not want to be accused of killing the puppies. And the puppies will need to be weaned from the mother. He said that they are also willing to talk to dog experts, such as Cesar Millan if they would be willing to take care of the fees and/or take the dogs away from Yucca Valley.

It would seem to me that someone(s) need to STEP UP and help this veteran get his dogs out of doggie jail, including the puppies. All of the dogs need to be spayed/neutered.

Just found this…

The Yucca Valley Animal Shelter has extended their action for ten days upon review of the insurance requirements placed on the owners for the condition to release the pets. I have written to the Town Manager and legal staff  offering to pay for the spay and neuter one of the pets. A citizen of Yucca Valley, after reading of the plight of this family to have their pets returned, has stepped forward as a guarantor of any installment payment plan to resolve this situation.

Blog the Change: the cat’s meow

Cici and I love finding out about innovative and creative programs created by people with hearts such as these.

Did you know that there is an app that allows people to play with cats at shelters in real time online for free… Adoptions increase and cats get socialized…

http://www.ipetcompanion.com/

Oregon Humane Society

“We still get lots of interest in the iPetCompanion. It’s really popular with everyone and it’s a highlight of our shelter tours. We love it.”
~ David Lytle, OHS, 21st July 2011 (10 months after launch)

Bideawee, New York

“I think it gives people at home or at work on their computer a great way to feel connected with live animals and in this digital age people really yearn for companionship and connection. When I travel I wonder all the time what’s happening at home with my cat, is he getting along with the pet sitter, are they having fun? And with a mechanism like this I could actually see my own pet at home in real-time.”

~Nancy Taylor, President & CEO, Bideawee

But for some reason, there does not seem to be an equivalent app or program for dogs. No playing fetch online? Enrichment programs at shelters.

http://www.centerforshelterdogs.org/Home/DogWelfare/Enrichment/Entertainment.aspx

There are also dog rescue heroines, one lady rescues homeless people and dogs in the LA area and provides a safety net so that people do not have to surrender their dogs

http://www.aikenstandard.com/story/a0962-BC-US-Pets-DowntownDogR-04-11-1137

Dog owners sometimes come into the South LA Shelter because they feeling forced to surrender their dog.  Most of the time the dog owner can’t afford to feed, vaccinate, spay/neuter, treat a minor medical issue, get basic obedience training, or even pay for a $15 dog license.  With Safety Net, LA Animal Services staff and volunteers encourage the dog owner to take their dog home, and call the Downtown Dog Rescue phone number on the postcard given to them.  When the dog owner calls the Downtown Dog Rescue Hotline Phone Number a volunteer will return the call within 48 to help address the situation that brought the dog owner to the shelter.

Super-Doggies

March 23, is National Puppy Day, and there is a new cast of animated characters helping to promote the adoption of dogs all over the world – the Super-Doggies.

The Super-Doggies are a trio of animated singing dogs featured in a music video encouraging people to visit dog shelters with hopes of giving abandoned puppies a caring home. The Super-Doggies feature Barack Obama’s dog, Bo and Vladmir Putin’s dog, Buffy.  In fact, in this video both world leaders join their dogs for a global dance party.  Lending a hand in the creation of this video is none other than Eugeniy (Eugene) Kuritsyn, the 2012 Oscar award-winning animator of Rango.

Eugeniy has teamed up with Grammy Award winning producer Neal Pogue who works with musicians like Nicky Minaj, Lil Wayne, Outkast and Pink.  The effort is also getting guidance from marketing veteran Bruce Kirkland who directed The Beatles Anthology project, the Beastie Boys, the Spice Girls, Radiohead, and Everclear.

Occupy the Shelters!!!

I LOVE the Adoption Centers model… and had an idea last night… Imagine, what if there were Adoption Centers and housing for both people and pets… homeless people would have decent housing, NOT a shelter where they have NO privacy nor dignity, a job to do, get a pet ready to be adopted, gardening (grow food), adoption center jobs and more… Imagine the miracles for both pets and people… Americans Need Jobs. Americans LOVE animals.

Homeless vets, seniors, all kinds of people could become well again through the power of LOVE… pets make wonderful companions… Both the pets and people and communities would benefit.  Similar to the Pit Bulls and Parolees concept at Villa Lobos… except I see smaller houses, maybe 5 or 6 bedrooms, and/or manufactured homes on land with Adoption Centers similar to Doggie Daycare Centers plus the Rehab Centers… Win win win win win win win…

And what if these Adoption Center places also fed the pets THE BEST PET FOODS, not the cheapest, fed the community pets with the best nutrition, the Rehab Centers could have Holistic Vets on board, there could be a doggie gym for agility, a Doggie Spa, a Shop to buy goodies to support the Adoption Center, a doggie pool, and more… No more doggie discrimination. No more pit bulls being put to sleep for how they look and/or because they are pit bulls.

Dreaming… Instead of coming from a mental / emotional place of Scarcity and we have to accept whatever is donated, shabby, crappy and poor mentality, this is revolutionary in concept and scope… a whole different way of THINKING and IMPLEMENTING… Something, places to BE PROUD OF, Places of Dignity and Health and Well Being for People and Pets… Imagine…

IT is TIME to CHANGE the status quo killing factories shelters into an Adoption Centers model…

Get rid of the Greed… and Hate… Eliminate the Greed and Hate…

That means WE have to change too… Not just Point Fingers and Blame, Accuse and Make Wrong… you cannot change something via hate… only LOVE makes a difference… honey works with bees, vinegar not so much… does not mean to sugarcoat, but learn compassion, forgiveness, and LISTEN…

I do NOT understand why someone would rather kill animals than find homes for them and save lives… AND I also know that when accusations are thrown at them, people resist, shut their ears, get defensive, run away, shut down…

There has to be a Win Win Win for ALL…

Am reminded of John Robbins, heir to the Baskin Robbins fortune, years ago he walked away from his family. And he had a dream about a cow. He writes about this in Diet for a New America. And what impressed me so much is how he got to go to factory farms for three whole months. He visited these horrible places where they not only slaughter animals but keep them in horrendous conditions. And he was there with an OPEN HEART and just Listened to the people who worked there. Somehow he was able to do that. Listen with an Open Compassionate Heart although he was repelled by what the people DID every day to the animals. Read the book, Get Inspired and Find Creative Solutions.

Create a Vision of the Adoption Centers you want and Make it Happen/Implement Step by Step by Step… Until It is Done… Manifest…

RIP Ace, this type of “accident”, killing the wrong homeless animal, or someone’s pet happens every day in every state in this country. Until we replace killing shelters with true Adoption Centers, where animals live happily in a healthy, cage free, communal environment and be socialized to prepare them for their new furrever homes. We can SAVE THEM ALL, not just 90% !

Please read a lot more and enjoy some videos at http://www.ShelterRevolution.Org

Let’s CHANGE this rotten system altogether by acknowledging the Past, weaknesses, corruption, and greed and HEAL ourselves and others…

Like the Fb page is http://www.facebook.com/ShelterRevolution

Shelter Revolution is the marketing effort to tell the world about the ADOPTION CENTER model. This innovative new facility plan brings ‘customers’ in with a whole new approach to displaying adoptable dogs and cats. It creates a calm, enjoyable atmosphere in a “touch and feel” setting.Introducing a new concept called “rehab,” dogs and cats not ready for adoption are sent into the care of local rehabbers to prepare them for return to the Adoption Center and placement.Read all about the other concepts that make up this whole new approach called the Adoption Center model at www.shelterrevolution.org

We need fun places where customers can go to see happy, healthy animals in large groups. Dogs and cats are SOCIAL animals, not meant to be isolated. For those animals who can’t get along, the Adoption Center model provides for rehab. The process of rehab will bring local rescuers and shelter workers together.

are you an extremist LIFE SAVER????

unreal…

http://yesbiscuit.wordpress.com/2011/11/15/killing-apologists-just-want-their-lives-back/

Rescue friends- if you have a plea that needs more attention, and exposure, pls be sure to post to the people for paws network. Thanks!

https://www.facebook.com/pages/People-for-Paws-Network/119735384716987

are you an extremist LIFE SAVER????

Are you an “extremist”? Take the quiz.

  1. I want the killing to end.
  2. I think it is wrong for shelters to neglect and abuse animals.
  3. If other communities can end the killing of savable animals, I believe my community should also.
  4. I care about animals and because I care about animals, I do not want harm to come to them.
  5. I believe in democracy and engaging my elected officials to create social change.

If you answered “Yes” to any of these questions, you are an “extremist” according to the ASPCA. If you answered “No” to all of these questions, the ASPCA thinks you’ll make a great shelter director and they will fight to defend and protect you.

if you have not read this, please DO…

http://www.nathanwinograd.com/?p=7390

Now here the ASPCA has (not) kindly but nevertheless has a list telling us what to do Step by Step…. Are you on board?  The Patrick Movement is a powerful force to be reckoned with and animal lovers CAN CHANGE THE WORLD FOR THE BETTER.

WHAT KIND OF COUNTRY DO YOU WANT TO LIVE IN?

WHAT KIND OF WORLD DO YOU WANT YOUR KIDS AND GRANDKIDS TO LIVE IN????

Are you with me???  Consider this your Marching Orders 🙂   Go Forth and SAVE LIVES !!!!

best pet 4 you

what’s the best pet for you and your family?

some things to consider when adopting a pet, go to your local shelter and find your new best friend… spay/neuter, and if you are able, think about getting a pit bull / mix… older pet, chi, or some of the other pets that get left behind such as the black beauties! also, most pit bulls do not make it out of the shelters alive in the US. California has an overpopulation of chi’s. Too many healthy pets end up on death row due to overbreeding, puppy mills, greedy breeders, etc.

Even Bo, the First Dog, wants us to help stop euthanizing sheltered and homeless pets… imagine how much money goes towards killing shelter pets. Thinking about how many thousands of tax dollars goes towards killing animals makes me want to donate my tax return refund to a No kill shelter.

don’t forget some of the very special former Vick dogs are available for adoption… read all about how to give one of these amazing dogs a home…

my dog is better than your dog

all of the life stages of your canine…  now I am wondering about the doggies who have puppies of different breeds, I heard somewhere that can happen … curious minds want to know about the puppies… so I googled and this is what I found out… yes, indeed, a mama dog can have puppies in one litter with different fathers.

http://puppyintraining.com/can-a-litter-of-puppies-have-more-than-one-father/

according to the chart below, in two years, my cici will be a senior… that seems crazy for a 7 year old dog to be considered old already.  My Cici is still a growing girl, silly puppy.  In two years, she’s gonna become cranky like moi????  hardly.

  • Puppyhood ends between six and 18 months of age.
  • Adolescence starts between six and 18 months of age.
  • Adulthood starts between 12 months and three years of age.
  • The senior years begin between six and 10 years of age.
Here’s what Cesar Milan has to say …

Puberty

The phase of puberty is usually rather short and will last from between one month and six weeks. It starts around the sixth month, and can manifest itself in many different ways: often your dog will behave badly and won’t want to learn anything new. Sometimes he may forget what he has learned so far, or at least pretend to. In this phase, you should be persistent and keep on with his education program.

I rescued Cici when she was six months of age and she was an adolescent… interesting… she did NOT bark until she was about a year old. I remember the exact moment because it surprised her and me both. She was looking out the window and all of a sudden this sound came out of her. She found her voice. We were both startled. She did it again and again. She is not a big barker, she likes to moan and make weird noises to get her points across but on occasion, she does bark at me, at the birds or at other dogs. Funny girl.

Aging in dogs… wikipedia suggests that aging in dogs varies according to breed and size of dog. There are factors related to longevity including diet, exercise and spay and neutering. I’d think that whether the dog had loving owners who treat them like a family member or if the dog had been abused, living on a chain, neglected, and other factors matter, too.  I would also think that where you live, city, town, country would make a difference, too.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aging_in_dogs

More about dog longevity… no info about the American Pit Bull Terrier nor Staffordshire Terrier, hmmmm… no data collected because the researchers could not care less about these dogs and/or they get euthanized too young/early?  ugh…
