Despite all of the craziness going on in our world this week, there has been a bunch of good news regarding pit bulls, yay… here are a few of the stories…

Lilly the pit bull lost her foot and leg saving her owner from certain death by a freight train…

If you would like to help the heroic Lilly, who will need a lot of medical care and therapy…

Pit bulls are no longer a restricted household pet in DeKalb County, a zoning change that its advocates say should help the county focus more on all dangerous dogs and possibly improve the adoption rate from its shelter.

United Continental discrimination

Here we go again.

Despite the fact that many communities are repealing heinous discriminatory bans of pit bulls, United-Continental airlines has just banned nine breeds of “dangerous” dogs from flying their “not very friendly skies.”

The restricted breeds include the following:

  • Pit Bull Terriers
  • American Staffordshire Terriers
  • Presa Canario
  • Perro de Presa Canario
  • Dogo Argentino
  • Cane Corso
  • Fila Brasileiro
  • Tosa (or Tosa Ken)
  • Ca de Bou

please sign and share  this petition, call and write and tell them to reconsider and repeal this breed ban on innocent dogs.

http://www.change.org/petitions/united-airlines-remove-breed-discrimination-from-pet-policy

I sent their media people two emails… here is one I sent to media.relations@united.com:

Smart move… at a time when most communities are repealing breed bans, why in the world would you ban people friendly breeds of dogs from flying on your airline?  I did not see dachshunds and Chihuahuas (breeds that show the highest likelihood of aggression aka dog bites towards strangers) on your list.

In a 2008 study published in Applied Animal Behavior Science, dog breeds were ranked based on their propensity for aggression toward owners, strangers and other dogs. The breeds with the highest likelihood of directing aggression toward strangers were dachshunds and Chihuahuas, with 20 percent of the sample attempting to bite or biting humans, compared with 7 percent for pit bulls.

NO breed deserves to be banned. Dogs are individuals as humans.

Mark Buehrle Forced to Move Due to Absurd Pitbull Ban

Mark Buehrle has a dream.

A dream that his four little dogs will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the ferocity of their appearance but by the content of their tameness. A 1989 pitbull ban in Miami-Dade County forced Buehrle to distance himself from the Miami Marlins ballpark in order to legally keep one of his dog.

According to the Miami Herald, Buehrle is an avid dog lover and wouldn’t even fathom parting with his pitbull Slater over the ban. The All-Star ace even said that if there hadn’t been a place for him and his family to move that permitted the pitbull, he wouldn’t have signed in Miami. Luckily for the Marlins, Broward County shares his love for canines…

When communities are considering breed-discriminatory legislation, they often place “pit bull” owners in a separate category from the rest of the dog owning population, and they draw on negative stereotypes and generalizations about “the kinds of people who have pit bulls.” But as this video shows, many “pit bull” owners have other kinds of dogs, too.  Stop relying on stereotypes and generalizations. Rachael Ray and Jennifer Aniston also have pit bull pups along with a whole slew of celebrities. Are you going to outlaw their dogs, too????

more info about United…

the carrier has delayed thousands of flights, wiped out the paid itineraries of an unknown number of travelers, “mishandled” who knows how many checked bags, misplaced the seat assignments of a clutch of its most frequent flyers, and generally annoyed the hell out of huge swathes of its customer base.

United has yet to apologize because being an airline means never having to say you’re sorry.

In fact, being an airline means never having to give you the seat on the plane for which you paid. It means never having to fly on time. It means not having to get you home if it strands you halfway around the world. Being an airline means never even having to fly you to the city that appears on the ticket you purchased. Actually, being an airline means never having to fly aircraft—which pretty much means you’re not even an airline.

local paper froths at pit bulls

my major pet peeves with pit bulls are:

1. they are bed hogs. has anyone ever written instructions on how to untangle yourself and get out of bed while a pit bull is snuggling on your belly or how to turn over while your dog is cuddling close into you?

2. they slobber all over you… I did not need that french kiss this morning nor the kisses all over my hands, legs and feet. Cici thinks if she kisses me enough I will get up but see the previous pet peeve for why that is not easy for me.

3. they want to kiss and say hello (wag wag wag) to everyone in the neighborhood.

dangerous dogs attacking…waa waa waa… BOL

It just gets tiresome, the same old blah blah blah in the news…

Pit bulls are once again blamed for people’s ignorance, fear and hysteria… the article is pretty balanced but most people won’t read anything but the scary headline…

No more pit bull discrimination in Ohio…

Ohio Governor John Kasich (R) signed on the dotted line, making Ohio House Bill 14an official law. HB 14 is a piece of legislation that will create a new and more refined system for defining a dog as potentially dangerous, removing the American Pit Bull Terrier and other “Bully breeds” from the list of automatically “vicious” dogs.

http://dogtime.com/pit-bull-discrimination-ends-in-ohio.html

Michigan and Ontario Canada are in the works, too…

http://www.clickondetroit.com/community/Pit-bulls-removed-from-Mount-Clemens-dangerous-animal-ordinance/-/2207168/8864914/-/ym11q8/-/index.html

Millions of innocent dogs are abused, banned and killed every year because of the way they look, and the heinous discrimination against them.   And the headline in your article feeds into the hysteria, stereotypes and fear. The cruelty visited upon these dogs is caused by irresponsible owners, dog fighters, and unfair stereotypes.

I live in Seaside, am a freelance writer/editor and personally rescued a Dalmatian/pit bull mix a few years ago. For the most part, my neighbors and people love her. But a few strangers fear her for NO reason. She is NOT aggressive and has been attacked by other dogs on several occasions.  Her typical response is to lie down on her back and show her belly (a sign of submission).Yet at times people have the nerve to come up to me and tell me that she is scary. Really?

One time in Border’s, one lady was afraid of my dog (for no reason, we were just walking around the store) and other people started reacting. The fear just spread throughout the store. Suddenly, this man brought his gorgeous 5-year-old blonde haired, blue eyed daughter over and let her pet Cici. Cici licked the girl’s face and wagged her tail. The whole scene changed instantly. I had tears in my eyes I was so grateful and thankful for this angel. Cici loves kids and is so gentle with them. Everyone could see that immediately and the potentially scary situation ended.

Many people have never met a pit bull and could not pick one out of a lineup such as this…

http://www.pickthepit.com/

Pit bulls were bred to be FRIENDLY to people and known as Nanny Dogs for 150 years… and pit bull is not a breed but a bunch of breeds…

No other dogs exemplify the BEST of the breeds known as pit bulls as the former Michael Vick dogs… Eight of these dogs, who were portrayed as the meanest, most vicious dogs of all time, have become therapy dogs. Many have been adopted into loving homes and are living with other dogs, cats, and children. Three of them in Monterey county (one died).

http://www.spcamc.org/rescued-dogs.htm

Some of the tale was told in the Lost Dogs book by Jim Gorant. And thousands of people follow the dogs and their owners daily trials and tribulations on Facebook.

Several of the dogs have made appearances on national TV (Rachael Ray, for one) but mostly the news is filled with hate and fear perpetrated against innocent dogs.

When do news reports tell about how the dogs have been treated by cruel, irresponsible and abusive humans? There is a known high correlation by law enforcement that people that abuse animals also abuse people including children. Yet animal abusers often receive slaps on the wrist instead of jail time and significant fines.

Whenever I read about any of the former Vick dogs what they went through, and I personally met the three dogs here in Monterey, it makes me ill.

For the first few months Cherry slept with his eyes open, a lot of the Vicktory dogs were shut down and trembled with fear/terror, could not eat properly, were terrified of strangers and new situations, Mel cannot bark to this day and many of the dogs were extremely skittish and wanted to find some place to hide. Handsome Dan used to pace and walk in circles because he was so terrified of the world. Even trying to get him to go on a walk would send him running. Oscar was absolutely terrified of people when he first came to Best Friends Sanctuary in 2008 (Note: 22 of the 51 dogs seized from Bad Newz Kennels went to Best Friends, 12 others went to BadRap, three to Monterey SPCA, 3 to Our Pack in SLO and the rest of the dogs were dispersed around the country). When he first showed up at Best Friends from the estate of Michael Vick, Cherry was shut down emotionally, especially when it came to being around people. For Cherry, meeting new people is still not always easy.

pit bulls rule the Internet

The good folks over at Mashable did a great blog post about 10 Animals With More Social Media Fans Than Major Media Outlets pages, http://mashable.com/2011/07/12/animals-social-media/

All is good.

However, they left out all of the good pit bull pages with all of the many thousands if not millions of pit bull fans…

Today is one of four annual Blog the Change Days, where pet bloggers promote their favorite people, organizations, and events that improve the lives of animals in communities and all of the pit bull rescues and pages listed play their part… Send them some love, likes and licks !!! BOL…

This is a good subject for BLOG THE CHANGE… because pit bulls are too often Hairy Puppers who because of dog fighters and a bad reputation given to them by the lame stream media go through Deathly Harrowing experiences.

Of course, the cute and cuddly and funny animals were what they were talking about. And Patrick’s story started off kind of grim, being a Hairy Pupper. Although he is doing great now, about 48 pounds and a happy dog, he had been starved near death and thrown in the trash. Perhaps people who are fans of cute, cuddly and funny pets probably do not want to know about dogs like Patrick nor about pit bulls.

Still, Patrick has the MOST fans of all around the world, around the Internet. He has more Facebook pages and fans than many celebrities, not only more fans than the media pages. Patrick has 60-100 Fb pages … The Patrick Miracle page alone has about 110,000 fans.  How many celebrities have 60-100 facebook pages? And Patrick’s pages are all over the world from Canada, England, France, Germany, to Finland, Sweden, USA, many of the 50 states, and some of those have north and south or specific cities such as North and South Florida, North and South California, Philadelphia, and others.

The Vicktory dogs, former v-dogs, each have their own fb pages, Hector, Handsome Dan, Jhumpa, Cherry Garcia, Audie, and Vicktory 4 Cherry, and others with a few hundred to a few thousand fans each. And of course, we know the Bad Newz that they went through, and survived and are doing great. Seven are now therapy dogs. And many have earned their Canine Good Citizen certificates. They are adopted into loving homes, with kids, other dogs and cats and living a good news life now.

America’s babysitters

There is something seriously wrong with a country that once revered pit bulls and trusted them with their children. Pit bulls were nanny dogs. They were once a symbol of our strength and loyalty, and now our country says these same dogs are vicious, mean and dangerous and wants to ban them??? Something WRONG with this 2011 America… Seriously wrong.  Maybe America has become mean and cruel in the way it treats its animals now. America needs to Rediscover America’s DOGS and stop banning, abusing, and euthanizing them. For every pit bull dog (and other animals) that we hurt, we lose a little piece of our own soul.

For every animal abuser that gets off with a slap on the wrist, no jail time or a $500 fine and community service, such as the case with Schmiegel the dog, like Patrick, he was starved for three weeks without food nor water intentionally by his owner. That is the sentence his abuser received a $500 fine and 10 days of community service. There is something twisted, sick and just plain wrong with someone who would starve a dog almost to death and there is something wrong with a system that allows this person to get off with such a small consequence to her actions.  She was talking about getting another dog in five years. Seriously?
